I eat a lot of mixed salads and have happily been adding sliced raw button mushrooms but have recently read 2 conflicting views - one saying they have toxins in them and should always be cooked and the other saying to eat raw mushrooms. Any views on this?

Hi gardenfrance,
As long as you really know what you are eating then I think that there is no problem. Here in Germany there are so many wild mushrooms and toadstools eaten that we tend to be very careful.
If bought from the supermarket I do not think that there is any problem - like most things, - one should eat them in certain quantities and not pounds of them each day.
I certainly put them in salads and have done for years and I haven't had any problems.

Thanks for such quick replies. I am only talking about shop mushrooms. The French, like most Europeans apart from the Brits, go crazy in the autumn looking for wild mushrooms. I have joined groups in the forests around here and then an expert checks them. Also you can take them to the local pharmacy where one of the staff is trained to check them, so anyone who gets sick - and there are always some! - has only themselves to blame.

My OH only collects the ones that his grandmother showed him and even if someone else says that he can take, this, that or the other, he never does.......
They taste lovely with onions and smoked bacon and fresh bread.

I love mushrooms and regularly eat them raw. Never had a problem, especially with shop bought ones.

I don't eat raw mushrooms because I think they taste better cooked! I've no idea about the health implications of either though.

Hi
I eat raw mushrooms all the time - well, not ALL the time obviously, I do eat other things too, and sometimes I'm not eating at all...
Anyway - can I recommend the raw mushroom sandwich for any raw mushroom lovers who haven't tried them? I have them for lunch at work, and they're scrummy... Just lightly spread two slices of some kind of bitty wholemeal bread (granary or some such...) with olive spread (Bertolli or something...), add chunks or slices of raw mushroom and garnish with either a little sprinkle of salt, a smear of mayonnaise and/or fresh herbs, and tuck in - scrumdiddlyumptious!
