Have fallen in love with this plant at my local GC. Just wondering, is 20 quid expensive for a specimen approx 60cm tall/wide? Also, are there any special requirements for it to thrive? I was planning on putting it in a shady north facing border

Hi RM ... 20 quid seems quite dear ... but on the upside, mine is in a shady border and thriving! They grow fast and look lovely as a background plant ... cheers ...

£20 is extortionate
Buy a small specimen either in the hardy plants section or the houseplant section (they're both the same plant) and grow it on....should cost around £7-8 and will grow like mad when it gets going.
But if you really like everything about this particular plant then go for it....otherwise you'll regret it !!!!

Looking at it from a different angle RM you could get 3 for almost the same price

I agree with Andy. Buy a smaller speciment and grow it on...they grow reasonable fast. I have one in a pot and paid about £6 for it three years ago.....it would've cost £30 for the same size one that it is now.
I love the shape of this plant.

I agree too! I got a 2 litre pot one a couple of years ago and it is about 4 foot tall now. Once they get going there doesn't seem any stopping them. I got flowers for the first time this year, very striking they are.

There seems to be no limit to fatsia's growth, given the right conditions; a few doors down from us is a derelict house with a garden we can see from upstairs and there's a huge tree-sized fatsia .... loks gorgeous (the house was recently bought and is being renovated, hopefully the new owners will leave the fatsia alone, or at least just prune it ...) ... cheers ...

£20.00 is a lot to pay for a plant that size! As everyone has said they do grow quickly - I started off with a £2.99 one and 3 years later it is about 4' tall

Well, I didn't buy it ...I went elsewhere and got a smaller specimen for 4.99 ;D

RM - That means you've got 15 quid to spend on other plants!!!

That sounds more like it.....it will grow in no time. Here's a pic of it beginning of last summer....it's outgrown this pot now... Fatsia Japonica

That's better RM - what are you going to buy with the £15.00 you saved?
