hi Mr Grinch, as a veteran of largescale planting, I was told (luckily in advance) that if not planted deep enough they would be so-called blind and I would have to dig them up and replant deeper. So that is part of the answer.
The guideline I was given because of a spread of varieties and bulb sizes, was 3x the height of the bulb - and that is the other part.
Enough worked for me to be let off the rest.
Hope that helps.

Nice to hear that something can be done about them not flowering. I have a problem here and I must confess that I probably do not plant them deep enough.
I always thought that a part of daffs not flowering again was that the leaves weren't being left to die down naturally. I tend to do the 6 week thing although my Mother swore it wasn't long enough.

Hiya I've also learned that if the bulbs are touching then they will come up blind. S x

Daffies need a set period of chilling (vernalization) to flower ie 10-12 weeks (tulips need 12-14 weeks) i've got a few that have come up blind as they were in the less sheltered parts of the garden so didn't get the necessary chilling.
Given the warmish winter i suspect that they may not have received this......i did wonder if mine would flower this year due to this and quite a few are blind.
If your planting depth is correct and not touching then this could be the reason.

I read this shame-faced. I bought Daffs, Tulips and Crocuses last year ready for Spring and all I've got to show for it are 2 Tulips my wife got the kids to put in the ground I've learnt two lessons from this. One: I've got to make time sometimes. Two: This proves they can do their own bit in the garden ... Three: Will the Tulips be orange, purple or white
