Is it a terrible thing to leave the cuttings on the grass?

Hi Robin
Well from what I can gather you have a large garden but if possible I would try and get rid of the grass cuttings.
I am afraid that it won't help. However perhaps if your garden is big enough you could also bury them - if you don't want to compost etc.
My FIL has a biggish garden - 1000sqm and he/we always used to mow the lawns and then have a couple of deep holes per year for the cuttings. We just used to throw the cuttings in and eventually close the hole.
We had some fantastic compost after a couple of years. The reason is that FIL refused to have a proper compost as he believes he would get rats. No amount of talking has ever changed his mind and at 96 I reckon he has a right to do what he wants.
Just a thought.

Well... with respect to the others, as usual, it depends...
1) if you have a 'rough grass' area that you don't pretend is lawn (and I see you do say "grass") then providing you cut regularly and can't see swathes of cut grass in lines afterwards, then no, I don't think it matters. It's how I maintain most of my "grass".
2) if you have an area you are trying to turn into or maintain as 'lawn' then the same applies - but will be difficult unless you have a 'mulching mower' specifically designed to cut grass into such small particles it gets lost. And then you must cut regularly or those lines will remain, and they will spoil what's beneath.
Can't think of a 3) but I'm sure there was one...
OM.

If you have a large area Robin, surely you must have lots of compost. Grass cuttings are a great activator if layered in amongst all the other garden waste (great for heating up a compost heap). Also good for mulch as long as its not too deep.

I'd rather collect it and add it to the compost or use as JL suggests as a thin mulch than mow more regularly Also hate walking on grass and getting all the clippings stuck to the bottom of my shoes Like your FIL's put it in a hole and bury it idea RF and worth the wait for all that lovely compost ;D

I have two tamed areas of about 2.5 acres and I only have the strenght to keep the smaller area grass cutttings free.I was hoping you were all going to say : it grand to leave the long lines of grass where there are. ..sadly no .Its not a lawn I want ,just a large area looking green and fairly weed free.so I better start collecting. Thanks all.

Robin, Rita's wildflower meadow idea is a good one and could be used to effect around an irregular perimeter, leaving a much smaller area to worry you - but now you've revealed the size of it, plainly collecting even on a lesser area is not a realistic option unless you have several (unsightly) dumps strategically placed.
I'd go for the 'shaggy meadow and lines' look for most if it was me, with a more cultivated 'shorn and collected' look closer to the house...

Sounds like a great idea Robin - otherwise I can imagine you building haystacks with all those grass clippings, wild flowers are a much better option ;D
