I have 2 trees in my garden that were stumps that I couldn't get rid of when I first started my garden just over 5 years ago. I have no idea what they are, but very glad that they survived.. The 2nd tree puts out suckers which I have removed and shredded - all but one. Is it possible to grow a full blown tree from a sucker? Its been in a pot over winter and is just one stem coming into leaf.

I don't know what they are, jlottie, but I'd love to know the name of the first one! I've been admiring a specimen on my walk to school for weeks. I adore the furry little catkins. The boys think it's a caterpillar tree! ;D

I don't thinks its a Salix Paul as it is very upright, the mature leaves are the same colour as you can see now. The photo is a bit blurred, I will try and get a better shot.

I would've said the same as Paul....Salix Caprea or the common pussy willow would be my stab in the dark and a wild cherry for the second. Seeing the first one when in leaf will confirm it's ID....Nearly all willows have thin, pointed leaves.

Glad I know what the first one is now, thanks Paul. What about the sucker I have growing in a pot, will it turn into a tree? I noticed some growth from the bottom of the stem just above the compost, if this grows do I need to cut it out and just keep one stem?
