Can't remember who but i'm sure we have a B&Q employee on here. Well went in to the Brighton store yesterday and had a mooch round the garden centre part. The shelves were brimming with bedding and people were walking out with it (via the checkouts ) by the trolly-full. Well a few weeks ago, i bought 12 geranium plugs for £2.95. yesterday, they were selling 24 geraniums....already pricked ou....for £3.95 . Plenty of other healthy bedding..begonias, imps, gazanias, petunias etc for the same price. Now i's obviously far too early to plant these out yet but the rate that they were selling yesterday, there will be none left by the end of the weekend, let alone mid may Will B&Q be getting future batches of bedding in as the "planting out season" draws closer ?

well unfortunately, we do seem to sell them too early to put straight out but those in the know buy them and keep them safe for a week or two before they put them out. Most people buy them in the sunny weather, plonk them in the garden and lose a few.
I'm sure I bought my geraniums etc around May/June time last year though?
They will have sold out by the actual planting out season arrives though and moved onto the other stuff as we seem to sell stuff before the season starts in "preparation". Everything comes in early to let people make selections. Unfortunately, they all get sold at that time too.
They'll probably have more stock coming in over the next week but I'd check again on Tuesday if I were you because Wednesday is over 60's day and with their 10% off they buy a helluva lot of plants!

Hi andy,
Why are you saying they are too early to plant out ?? Ive always planted my bedding in Mid April, and hardly ever get a frost. Most of mine do really well. Sure you loose occasional one, but you usually loose some anyway. No plant has a 100% success rate. Remember, its May next week !

Well bear in mind they've been on sale for just over a month and people were buying them as soon as they went on the shelves, I would say that was a bit early!
Been back in work for first time in a fortnight as we've got a compound full of plants so can't believe your local has sold out! Bet they've got some more in soon.

You're very lucku Mr G....we're still getting hard enough frosts to have to scrape the car windscreen in the mornings. Personally, i wouldn't dream of planting out until at least mid May......don't forget, we could still get snow !!!

I never plant plugs out before May - something my Grandma taught me and it never went away My non-gardening g.friend bought a lot of plugs one year and planted them all out in April - was horrified when they all died She does however buy hot house plants and put those in the garden too - just stopped her the other day from planting an orchid outside - she isnt safe to be inside a garden centre - I always insist I go in with her Not always a good idea as it makes me buy something too

Hi andy and Jennywren,
I think i am lucky here where i live. I am not far from the estuary and Southend and the temp seems to be a degree or so higher than the surrounding countryside. Some friends who live 10 miles or so away usually get frost on a cold night and i very rarely. I always keep an eye of though, and have some news paper ready to cover them over !

we've been selling plants off at obscenely low prices in the past few days.
If I hear the phrases "last of the big spenders" or "bargain of the century" again I will honestly commit murder.

Packs of 12 plants are now half price in B&Q. Only the 12 plants bedding trays though, not the others.

I got 7 trays of bedding plants earlier including the hanging basket selections for £4.85!
Proper pleased with myself. Some of the hanging basket ones in single pots were marked down to 1p each too but I didn't buy any of them.

Just been out to look on my plants. Bought 108 plants for £4.85 and only 3 are looking worse for wear. Just have to decide where to put them now and seeing as I'm incredibly indecisive about these things they'll probably still be in the trays next week...

latest bargains... 24 upright geraniums 50p (from 3.98) Marguerite standard 10p (from 19.98) 6 Gazania mahogany kiss £1.50 (from 3.98) Hanging basket selection "Hotter than july" 10p (from 6.98) 6 Fuchsia upright "display" £1.00 (from 3.98) Hanging basket already planted up £1.00 (from 12.98) Just dead headed the Marguerite and it's looking a damn site better already and it has new growth on it. Just needed a drink and some tlc. The hanging basket only has 1 dead plant in it, rest are fine. Hanging basket selection was only a little dry, that'll perk up and be absolutely fine and absolutely nothing wrong with the gazanias or fuchsias. The Geraniums are looking a little peaky but they'll be fine too. Feeling very chuffed with myself again although I have absolutely no idea where the plants are going to go. Especially the hanging basket as I don't actually have anywhere to hang it But for £1 I was not going to let someone else buy it ;D The basket alone is worth a fiver.
