Hi all,
Im a new convert to Hosta's. Ive always refused to buy them thinking they are such boring plants, but i finally bit the bullet and bought 6 1litre pots with two different varieties. I was struggling for plants to brighten up a particularly shady damp area and have found these have done the trick. The bright green of the leaves really brightens up the area. Now my question: Will Hosts's tolerate wet conditions in winter ?? I wouldn't say it boggy but its bordering on it if we have a particularly wet spell ! The reason i ask is that ive got a nice spot at the front of the border with conditions they like, shade with a tad sun but remains damp in summer. The only problem is the winter ! Will they survive ?? Mr G

Should be fine. They're bog plants and i've grown them as a marginal in a fish pond for many years.
Just watch the slugs as i'm sure you're aware !!!!

Thanks Andy, I was a bit concerned because some web sites say they prefer moist but well drained soil and some say they cope well on a more wetter soil. I just wasnt sure which was correct. The varieties i have is Hosta 'fortunei Francee'. Will it be ok ?? Mr G

I've grown Francee before in the pond mr G....a long while ago though.
There are some incredible hosta varieties about...and boring they certainly are not !!! Lovely golden leaves, large, steely blue leaves, varigated, small thin leaves.....and then there's the lovely lilac flowers too.
Enjoy
