I have two in the front garden....south facing in full sun and in solid chalk....and they never get watered but they just go from strength to strength. The green one is Acer palmatum dissectum and i have to cut it back every year and the red one is A. palmatum dissectum 'garnet'. Both grow over the fish pond out the front, i used to have a waterfall where the red one is but you can't see it any more....no contest what i prefer though.

Lovely specimens ! I always thought they need dappled shade but it just shows that if you give them enough water they will thrive !

My acers were in a right mess last year and I thought that I would lose them all - however they seem to have heeded my warning and pulled themselves together a little. Apart from on they are all in tubs as I do not have the room. Acer Palmatum "Chitoseyama" Acer Palmatum "Garnet" standard. Acer Palmatum Dissectum "Viridis" Acer Palmatum "Orange Dream" - this one caused real problems last year. Acer Palmatum "Butterfly" RF

I'd like an orange dream acer. We sell the garnet one at work. They're £12.98 though so out of my price range at the moment.

Well "Orange Dream" was a present and I must admit I wasn't too happy about it at all. Somehow it is a little gaudy if you know what I mean.
However I got the shears to it in Autumn last year and although it still isn't a wonderful form, it does at least look a little better.
Garnet wasn't in top form last year either - well none of them were but they seem to be doing better this year and I must admit I do like them.

I have Orange Dream as well and I agree with RF a little that it does stare you in the face a bit, but after 3 years and a few cut backs, it is starting to look a treat.

I haven't seen any orange dreams at work Andy, just the garnet ones. But they are about 2-3 foot high for £12.98
