I have been watering and feeding this for a couple of weeks, thinking that it is one of my prize possessions. Mmmmmh - well I now think it could be a weed but I am not sure. Has anyone got any ideas? RF

Some kind of poppy? Sara

That what I thought right from the start and why I carried on watering it but if it is then it is self-seeded as I haven't any poppies in the garden.
However something tells me that it could just be a weed of some description.

Just been and looked at the several types of poppy i've got scattered about, and none of them looks quite the same as your plant.
It looks as if it's throwing up a flower head so you won't have long to wait to see what it is ;D

I thought I would take the photo now in case I forget later, so this is one of my (perennial) poppies.

Thanks all - I don't think that it is like yours Spruance - as nolawn says there is a flower coming I think so we shall soon know. I do hope that I haven't been pampering a wonderful weed.........
BTW Spruance I bet that looks gorgeous - Poppies and forget-me-nots together. Or do they just miss each other?

Hi RF. Y'know the more I look at your prized possession, I think you were right, it's gonna be a weed. The lack of hairiness rules out a lot of the poppies. Keep us posted. I'd love for it to be something gorgeous ;D N

i magnified the plant and it's got hairy leaves so you might be on the right path by guessing at a type of poppy. a bird could have carried the seed into the garden

I have had another look this morning and it is certainly growing in leaps and bounds and I have also found another two plants which are the same.
What a let down if I have been pampering a weed.

I remember planting some Icelandic Poppies a couple of years ago that I don't remember being hairy. Do they get hairier with age? Mine didn't last long enough for me to remember them very well - they were eaten away by slugs within days and never reappeared.

So another pic but I don't think that it helps an awful lot - or has someone as few ideas. RF

My first suggestion would be a poppy - a bird could easily have eaten some seeds and redistributed them from the source to your garden My other thought was a thistle, but it's got too many leaves for that I think.

There was a plant on GW tonight RF, and I thought that the leaves looked very much like your mystery plant.
The one on GW was Cirsium rivulare 'Atropurpureum', which is an ornamental thistle, with purple thisle-like flowers held on tall stems.
Problem is that the only online photos I have turned up show only the flowers and not the leaves.
I just wondered if anyone else noticed the plant?

Here is the latest from my mystery plant - it is certainly looking more and more like a Poppy. I am not quite sure what the reddy bits are though? RF

It's a poppy....Papava sp. The red bits are the little hairs that cover the flower buds

Thanks Andy - I am assuming that they arrived in my garden thanks to the birds. I seem to have half a dozen of them.
I am looking forward to see what colour they are.

Ooooh RF not long then to wait, it's certainly got some flowers on. Probably be better pink and white rather than red with that Astrantia I spy at the back . It certainly looks a nice healthy plant

It's flowered - and what a gorgeous surprise. It isn't the normal Poppy red, nor the wishy washy pink and not the white either. It is a gorgeous dark red - darker than the pic makes out. I am really pleased amd will let that happily seed for next year, even if it is only a very simple poppy. Sorry about the pic - I got too close - I will try for another. RF
