Noticed in the Gdn Chat thread that a few of you have found Lily Beetle recently. Found my very first one yesterday never ever seen one before and I've had Lillies for a least 10 yrs. Guess I've been very lucky. It only got the chance to have that one nibble of the leave before it got the squash it between something treatment ;D Guess I'll need to be on the look out for more of them now

I've learned something about Lily Beetles this week. My uncle went to his gardening club on Tuesday and there was someone there giving a talk on garden pests. One thing to look out for when checking for Lily Beetles is black soot-like deposits on the stem. This is where the grubs hide away, and presumably change into adults, so if you squish the grubs thats half the problem solved.

Hello Spruance - it's more like 'gunge' - really yukky ) (actually their excrement ) I check my Lilies every time I walk past them - Count to date 9 Adults, 2 lots of gunge

I've had at least 30, 7 in one day. And that was on the fritillaries, long before the lilies were showing their heads. I think I'm doomed with lilies.

Is the problem that you're all determined to be organic? I gave my lilies a good zap with systemic bug spray when I saw the first beetle, weeks ago, and not seen one since.

Well I don't know about anyone else but I don't use any chemicals at all on the garden and haven't done so all the time I have lived here, so that's getting on for 14 years.
So I'm afraid that systemic bug spray is right out. On the other hand a blue tit has been spotted near the lilies recently so hopefully it might take a fancy to the beetle larvae. Which, having seen one at the weekend are actually a dark brown rather than sooty colour, as offered earlier.

I have just been weeding the borders and have found five of these horrid creatures lurking on my lily leaves, some of which are turning red making the little critters even harder to spot! Squish, squish, squish, squish, squish!!! Tig
