for those who haven't seen/used them, here's a 'jiffy' plug... I was reminded of these by another thread and found an old pack to use for some basil - they're ideal for anything with a bushy root system (ie not beans, sweet peas, most veg) where transplanting is a worry - cos after germination you just bung the whole thing into the ground (or in this case a pot to grow on a bit). We used to use them for lavender and box cuttings very successfully. They look like a domino wrapped in a bit of hair net to start with, then you soak them overnight and they swell to final size for using. These are about 10 years old, so they have a good shelf life. They don't seem to have much nutrient in them, so move stuff on quickly - but as you can see, this little seedling is barely at the conventional 'ready to prick out' stage - yet has rooted through. You'd be hard-pressed to move it without damage from a conventional seed tray.
