I have 2 Pyracantha at the front of my house and need to train them vertically. As these will be in full view i was wondering wether to use trellis or a wire support what do you guys think Cheers in advance Steve

hi stevemc I've used vine eyes and wire for mine. it's a lot cheaper than trellis, and you won't even see the trellis once the pyracantha grows

I'd go for trellis, principally because I have got pyracantha trained up trellis both in the back garden, and in a high profile position at the side of the house. Then again I also have a vine eyes and wire arrangement at the bottom of the garden, which is equally effective. The panels in the back garden were made specially as they are an unusual size (7ft high x 6ft wide) but the panel at the side was, as I recall, only around £15 as it was an 'oddment' down at the local fencing manufacturer. I agree that vine eyes and stout wire would be the cheaper option generally speaking, and with pyracantha all you really need is something to hold it to the wall, so it just comes down to aesthetics and your budget.

I have just planted 3 and I will be using wire as they are to go across the fence!

I'd go with vine eyes and strong heavt duty wire, it will do the job and there will also be less maintenance. I would have thought a good heavy duty wire would outlast trellis. Good luck

I've just got some wires across the fence and it has worked quite well, althought mine haven't exactly been trained, merely tamed. ;D I've got the bog standard green stuff on a brown fence and can't even see it.
