This time last year we were being encouraged by GW as well as the press to get rid of our traditional plants and replace them with drought loving plants - you know, those horrible spikey things which look totally out of place in a good old Cottage Garden.
All on the strength of one hot summer, but Monty was quite insistant.
Luckily I didn't listen.
Bet they all feel right fools now!

You've got a point there Slugger ;D I'm biased though because I love a good old fashioned cottage garden.
I do like some of the spikey things but they would look out of place in my garden. Have a couple of Bamboos in pots though and they look ok near the pond.

Monty will just say, but the trend is for warmer summers, so it's best to be prepared. I didn't listen, either!! Keith

Really glad to hear other people talk about "those spikey things". i thought it was just me who viewed them so disparagingly. Give me a nice flowery smelly thing any day. No, I don't mean my Mother! ;D

I watch the progs...take in the advice...then do what I want. I try not to be a slave to fashion...s'funny how much orange and purple has crept into my garden tho If this chuffing weather continues my garden will be a mangrove swamp by next year....

I tend to go along with Beth Chatto - let the conditions dictate what plants to grow. I have a sunny dry area in my garden on which I have laid gravel and will grow drought loving plants (actually I quite like the spiky things. I am especially fond of Eryngiums and Syssirinchium (sp?)). There is an area of very dry shade in front of the house so I will be looking for shade loving plants. The moister area at the bottom is ideal for the cottage garden.

Well, it'll give them another excuse to clear out the beds when they come back on air. Hate to think what's happened to the pond though...
