This is purely hypothetical, you understand ... Say, for instance, that you were in your local supermarket, and they were selling gorgeous ferny green acers that were at least 7 foot tall for a pittance, and one accidently found it's way home with you, but your husband had banned you from buying any more plants. Would it be terribly immoral, say, to just plant it up quick and make out it's been there for ages? Considering said husband doesn't take a lot of notice of outdoor goings on, like. Any thoughts?

My OH doesn't take much of an interest in the garden, but I dare say she'd notice the addition of a 7 ft tall tree...thin ice methinks.

I had the same trouble when i used to keep marine fish....for years i used to bring these gorgeous fish home and tell my wife they only cost a fiver. Until the day she decided to go and look for a fish for my birthday....armed with a fiver in her purse, she discovered she was about £80 short on the lovely red fish i liked and £65 short on the nice blue one. Oh boy did i get it in the neck when i got home As for plants, well i'm lucky enough to get most of my stuff either for nothing or very cheap....or my mate usually gets bored and gives me his stuff.

Isn't it strange that i could easily spend £120 on a small, 2" tropical fish but i'd never even contemplate spending a quater of that on a plant....too many years of growing things for myself or getting them for free me thinks. I did spend £25 on a golden leaved Catalpa this year and that hurt !!!!.....well worth it though

Mmmm. My OH doesn't notice much in the garden either and can just about tell the difference between a primula and a poppy - he couldn't name them though!! But a 7 ft tree??? Well I guess firstly it would depend on the size of your garden - if you've got acres for it to get lost in then it wouldn't be much of a problem, but with a little garden it would probably stand out like a sore thumb. So have you actually bought this tree then? How about telling your OH that a friend bought it for your birthday? That you found £20 on the street and couldn't resist? Oh I don't know!!! ;D

Mmm....yes...tree currently in garden . I have a spot next to the fence for it, and my jasmine will sort of obscure it from the house (sort of). Ho hum. Think I might have to 'fess up. Maybe if I do some of the glossing he'll let me away with it. He hates painting! ;D

That is an easy question to answer. When it comes to buying plants, I have NO morals...................especially if they are a bargain. It would be wrong NOT to buy them.

same here W.D i have no morals when it comes to buying plants. put the tree in your garden R.M. and lie through your teeth. if other half asks, you tell him its been there for ages and if he's not noticed it before he surely needs glasses. after all how could he miss something that size.

Years ago I could get away with practically anything in the garden although a 7ft tree would have been difficult even for me.
After my OH retired from the forces, he went to work part time for a gardener of all people and gone was the sneaky plant buying that I had so enjoyed.

beanie,
you are a master of the art of psychology. That's just the thing to do. Confound the man RM. Act so hurt (a pleading look, a sigh or two, even a silent tear maybe?) by the fact that he notices not, your efforts to beautify his life by creating a garden of wonderment and delight. You will make him feel so guilty that he will actually encourage you, nay BEG you, to go out and 'spend a bit' on something that makes you feel good. If only to assuage (lovely word) his feelings of PROFOUND guilt.

I think this falls into the ' I got this out of the family allowance' and ' New?...I've had this blouse for aaaaaaages...it's been at the back of the wardrobe' category.... ;D My OH has a strop now and again when I come home from an expedition with another huge bag of compost or another plant...but on the whole he can see how happy I am in the garden, I'm not out on the razzle, and I don't have 200 pairs of shoes or owt...I also don't bat an eyelid when he gets another computer game....

I bought an Acer for a quid, reduced from £13. Although I wasn't actually lying on this account, OH doesn't mind me buying them if it's a bargain. Therefore, I would plant it up and if he says anything just say that you bought it recently cos it was reduced to a fiver to clear, from £28 quid. He'll be so chuffed that you got such a bargain he won't say no more.... hopefully anyway ;D

My friend and I often go to the local garden centres, but we only ever buy bargains. When our OH's say anything about us buying yet MORE plants, we usually say either, we couldn't leave them as they were such a bargain, or that we were not allowed to leave the GC (or B&Q or wherever) unless we bought something, or even that it would have been cruel to leave them on their own as they were the only ones left on the shelf and they needed some TLC. Occasionally though, I just don't tell my OH I have bought another plant. He doesn't do the garden, so he would never notice anyway.

RM, I have just planted two reasonably substantial Photinia 'red robins' and moved a fairly big bamboo. OH noticed nothing. On being asked if anything looked different, he mused that one corner of the garden looked 'busier' . Well, that's not surprising. Bare earth one day, Photinia and bamboo the next. So I think you'll be perfectly safe sneaking them into the garden ... cheers ...
