Hello everyone. I am looking for some ideas for 4 window boxes which are situated outside my kitchen at the top of the steps. I would like some nice smelling plant so that the scent wafts into the kitchen when the door is open. They should only be up to 1 foot high but can be trailing as well. Come on guys get your thinking caps on please I'm going bug eyed looking through flower books for ideas. Thanks for any help.

How about Nicotiana? Make sure you go for a scented variety though.

Well Drunken One, I would have to say Dianthus, something like Doris. I went down my path yesterday to put the bins out, and the smell from my ones nearly knocked me over. They are covered in beautiful bright pink blooms, and they are not spoiled by the rain.

Hi there,
How about filling them with herbs, that way you can smell them and use them in your cooking ;D

My box nearest to the kitchen door has mints in, they smell great when you rub past & are so useful on wet meal times.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I already have a herb bed so another one was not on my list, great idea though. The Dianthus Doris sounds great and it was my late mothers name, I will have to look out for that one. Carol.

If you go down the annual route, some of those Sweetpeas they now do for hanging baskets may be worth a try

The good thing about dianthus (apart from Doris being your Mum's name) is that it is so easy to take cuttings. Always a bonus for a Scot ;D

Dark blue petunias.....they smell gorgeous. Pansies and polyanthus in winter smell lovely too when the sun's out on them.
Obviously a bit late for the petunias this year but next sumer would be good....i have some and they really are strong. You could interplant them with orange marigolds and night scented stock.
