This is just a silly thing but I am SOOO chuffed about it! I planted 3 Hazels about 14 years ago and I had to lop one back quite hard this afternoon as it is shading the kids climbing frame too much. I ended up with a rather large pile of 12ft lengths and I think I may actually be able to trim them up and use them as plant supports! Coo! My very first harvest of the fabled Hazel poles......what am I going to grow up them?
OO! I could wait until Spring and try and use some willow withies to make tripods couldn't I? Oo, I've had a vision........how hard are they to build? Anybody ever had a go? I tell you,Gardeners are the most patient people on the planet, aren't they?!
How much can be removed from one tree, btw? Can I take all of the branches off? Will it re generate or should I leave some? I know it's the wrong time of year to do it - but I shall have to do something about the other trees in the Spring. They have started to bear quite a lot of nuts too. Lovely.

Hi 4P, when I was a kid, Hazel poles were always used for Runner Beans and coppiced specially for the purpose. No bamboos and/or netting back then. They were bundled up and stood in a corner for the winter and lasted for years! Do you want your tripods to grow? Cos if you use Willow it will take root very easily.

'ello Nightowl, I made smallest a willow house when she was 2 and it's a monster now! I wish I'd never made it as it shoots up when my back is turned and is very difficult to keep under control...my view on living willow structures in the garden has become somewhat jaundiced because of it - one of those things that sounds lovely in principle but is, in fact, really hard work....I'm still chuffed about my hazel though - I feel like a proper gardener at the moment! (it won't last) ;D

Those willow constructions are called designer objects. As in: do not try this in a real garden. Hazel now that is lovely. It will keep and give you such pleasure. I have a slightly tall ( 10 feet ) tripod that has a climbing rose on it. It should last me ten years I guess. Good stuff.

Fantastic 4P, when OH was Game keeping he used to cut V sticks and had some fancy ends put on some, silly man gave them all away over the years. Aren't the new stems a wonderful rich colour. If I'm remember he would cut them every other year during winter and quite low too.

In true woodland coppicing, me old mole-free 4P, they're cut right down to 'stools' about 18inches high - the whole lot. So, 'how much?' Loads, if you want to. It's as precise as that... very forgiving, hazel. OM.

If I'm remember he would cut them every other year during winter and quite low too. An old friend of mine used to do that, but he always looked for the ones that had wild Honeysuckle on them, so they had a really fantastic twisted pattern all the way up. Looked great!
