I have the green ones which like Hawthorn trees. I don't THINK they do any harm,

they are sapsuckers i think, i dont think they do much harm.

As Barbara says they are suck-sapping insects - so I suppose a foe. However I have never had to do anything about them.
Just don't pick them up because they are also called Stink bugs - they can release a rather foul smelling liquid. There are so many different types but although I seem to have quite a few in the garden, I have never had any problems with them.

Last year we found loads of the southern shield bug as mentioned in the RHS article, which are thought to be possibly more of a problem than the native shield bug. It was very late in the season though so they did not in fact cause a problem. It could be that they will in the future as we do seem to be getting more 'continental' pests.
