I was looking around Woollies today for a toy for a friend and couldn't resist looking at the cheap plants.
They were selling rose bushes reduced from £4.99 to £1.99. Many different varieties from bush roses to climbers. What caught my eye was a purple climbing rose (picture looked much like Rhapsody in Blue) but it wasn't named as such. They did have a few named ones - the climber Paul's Scarlet.
I couldn't decide whether to buy - I usually buy online or by post .
Anyone have any experience of buying roses from Woolworths?

Mmmmm PJ I'm always a bit wary. You can get some bargains but need to be really picky and inspect the plants. If you think they've been packed up for goodness knows how long, neglected, and are usually very stressed out from being in such unatural surroundings etc etc etc. Theres always the risk of them failing, saying that I have had a few bargains but also a few failures too. If you can pick the best one and give it loads of TLC you could be ok. Paul's Scarlet is a lovely Red and perfumed if I remember I'm sure some of the others will have stories of bargains they have nurtured back to life and also some put in the compost bin

Thank you chuckles. I have at least 15 roses and I seriously don't need any more. But I can't resist a bargain, usually! Today I decided to desist.

I buy plants when I feel sorry for them and years ago bought three rose bushes from Woolies and they are fabulous. Yesterday had a good bargain from Wilkinsons a garden fork for £4.97. My other is bent and I know it wont do for heavy digging but ok for me.

Morning Purple, with good bareroot roses selling for £7.99 upwards, I'd give something at £1.99 a try, as long as it looks as if it just needs TLC, and not full resuscitation

why I do it but I have gone back to Woollies in Walthamstow and bought 2 roses for £1.99 each. I is called Blue Star and the other is just called Purple Climber - couldn't resist my fave colour. The last rose I bought was from 4 Seasons Nursery in Northamptonshire - I paid £7.99 for Tickled Pink and it looks pretty damn untickled at the moment. So now I have to find somewhere to put them! PJ

Jenny I am sure you have looked this up already, but David Austen Roses in Shropshire sell Paul's Lemon Pillar for £10.95. It is a lot more than my £1.99 roses from Woollies. You obviously have a superior taste!

I love this time of year for bargains. I got three half hardy perennials from Homebase today, for £1.99 each, from £4.99. So I'll be able to take cuttings, and keep the original plant too.
