My OH has told me that I can have a greenhouse for christmas!!!! Woo Hoo Now, what do you reckon on a second hand one? Or would it be best to have a new one? The plot it will go on is roughly 12' x 7' so I reckon an 8' x 6' will be what I'm aiming at (can you get a 10' x 6' greenhouse? Must go and google....) Just wanted to share my excitement....

I have a 10' x 6', so the answer must be yes Is it at the lottie or home (this makes a difference to everything in my book)?

I'm really pleased for you, I love my greenhouse, though I wish it was twice the size, or make that three times. Hope you enjoy it ;D

I suppose now would be a good opportunity to debate the merits of wood, aluminium or polycarbonate? Might help skarloey to choose.
I have a polycarbonate. It's been serviceable and is easy to clean but it doesn't half make a noise in the wind - and we get lots of that here.

WEY HEY fab news Skarloey Go for the biggest you can get on the site ;D I have a 6ft x 6ft Alliminium and glass one wish it was twice the size but I do have the poly kennel now as well so thats probably better than having a bigger GH. I've not had any experience with the different types of GH's so can't help there. You can pick up some good second hand ones though. I'm really excited for you

CPC, it's to go in the garden. Actually, it's to go on top of my little veg patch. Now that I have the allotments, I'm not using the patch as well as I could. I love my little potting shed but it really isn't light enough for the amount of seedlings I want to bring on. I've just had a quick look on ebay and I've found this ; cgi.ebay.co.uk/Greenhouse-nearly-new_W0QQitemZ220136098079QQihZ012QQcategoryZ42153QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemLooks lovely eh? So if this is the first time I've looked and found that one, I reckon I might be able to find a second hand one out there somewhere before Christmas. And flippety-flop, aren't new ones expensive? I'd love wood, I'd even like a little brick wall for it to sit on but being realistic, I'll get what we can afford and love it just the same. Now the long, front side will be south facing and the back of it will be against a wooden fence, will this be a problem? Should I paint the fence white? The west end of the greenhouse will start to go into the shade at about 3pm (mid summer) is this okay? Otherwise, I can swap the pottingshed and greenhouse round and the greenhouse will stay in the sun most of the day. What do you think? Blimey, questions, questions..... but I need to know!!! ;D Thanks to you all for being excited too..... I knew you would be. ;D

You'll love it ! Get the biggest you can feasibly afford and fit in. My 8' x 6' aluminium one is way too small really. I manage but heaven knows how sometimes !!
I got mine 2nd hand (free of charge - they just wanted rid of it !!)and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. If you're going to do that, I'd get one that is currently in situe so you can see that it's all ok and then you can take it down yourself. It doesn't take long.

OOOH! Lovely............what fun you're going to have choosing and planning! I have a GH (originally my parents) and a 30ft PT and I would say your priority is to position it with the maximum light available - you can always shade it but you can't make it sunny! So if you have the time, energy and enough willing bodies I would switch your shed and GH round - you'll wish you had for years afterwards. It's worth making the effort now....... Second hand ones are perfectly acceptable as you have the bonus of knowing that you've saved a GH from certain death, and done your bit for the environment too. Glass is easy to replace isn't it? Are you going to have a concrete floor? All that sort of stuff is worth sorting out properly too. Personally I think that's the best option as it's easiest to keep tidy (if only I practised what I preach....) I bought the school GH from www.greenhousesdirect.co.uk and found them very helpful. I haven't erected it yet though! They seem to have lots of different styles, sizes and shapes and lots of bits and pieces for the inside. Don't forget to include the kit for a water butt - it's amazing how much water comes off a GH roof. Have fun!

Erm....... you know I was going to be getting a greenhouse for christmas? Well...... I thought I'd put a little bid on that one on Ebay and only went and won it for £122!!!!!! Thanks for your replies GH, FA and 4P. GH helped keep me calm with minutes to go on the auction... thanks my friend! FA, hopefully, with me, OH and FIL we'll be able to get it down in no time and into FIL's tranny. 4P, I was thinking of a strip of concrete through the middle and a 4-6" border for the greenhouse to sit on I really want borders for the tomatoes and cucumbers. OMG, I can't believe I won it. Just got to do some call-ins now to pay for it!!! ;D Looks like I'll be getting bits to go in it for Christmas instead now! ;D
