Hi all ...
I guess part of gardening is always looking to the future; I've been wondering around planning to rip out slug-fodder lupins and replace them with cannas, penstemons and liatris, tear up an oregano bush which is encroaching on 1mx1m of precious tiny garden and plant Crocosmia Lucifer etc. ... what plans are you all making for next year? What bits of your gardens need a complete revamp? (or is everything fine as it is <envious smiley>?) ... cheers ...

I think a lot of mine will change, although my excuse is that this is the first year I have been here and not known anything about (a) gardening and (b) what I want in a garden!
For eg, under the tree is being re planted, I am making raised beds for my veg patch and I will be replanting the narrow border near the house as it is still empty (albeit with the toms/runenr beans on it atm)

Oh CC, I know what I will be doing in the future and it begins with 'W'; Weeding, weeding, weeding. I have mare's tail and I therefore shall always have it. And to prevent it swamping everything that is lovely I have to weed it out. I long for a time I can walk around my garden and not see mare's tail. Even if I revamped my garden I would still have mare's tail. God help me.

I am thinking about moving some of my plants around in the borders. I may also make the borders a little larger (will soon have no grass left!). I have a pebble pool, but am thinking of looking at doing a small pool built out of a container (just been reading up on them). Haven't got the room for a pond unfortunately.

Don't read any further Foz...... The poor tortured roses are getting dug up, not to be replaced and I'm going to dig up some more grass ;D Thinking of moving things around to have a spring border and a late summer border with lots of deep colours. Adding another tree for a bit more privacy from the trampoline jumpers behind me and I am getting rid of some of the thugs and moving some of them down to the lottie. Thats it so far, roll on Autumn so I can get cracking

I am having a major revamp over the next year.....I've been struggling to hold back the weeds organically for the past 15 years and this year I finally lost! So I am having a once in a lifetime spray with the least noxious weedkiller I can find and then I am rebuilding everything. I like the way I laid the garden out originally so I shan't muck about with that but I shall replant my flower garden, get the path finished, rebuild the rose arches, clear the grass from under all the fruit trees and plant a circle of wild flowers around each one, mow a proper, permanent path through the orchard and leave the rest of the grass long, try and underplant along the top edge with bluebells, sow a grass strip where the nettles were and keep it mowed tight, and lay out the veggie garden with a proper rotation plan instead of the chaotic way I did it this year. PLUS I would really like to make some artwork for around and about - I have a lovely quotation I want to paint on a fence at the front edge of the flower garden and if finances allow (I don't expect them too...) I have a plan for a metal double framed archway stacked with logs to make a living gateway to the wild bit of my garden. That's the plan anyway....... And keep the rodent hordes away FOREVER

4P, if I was closer I would be around tomorrow to give you a hand, in fact we should organise a work party (but I'd expect a roast dinner thrown in or at least a flapjack) Take it easy, bit by bit apart from the rats ;D

Well, thanks dear - it's the thought that counts! ;D I think I should cut down on the flapjacks actually or I may have to double the width of the planned paths............. ;D

I'm afraid I started moving things around last week. If I wait till everything dies down, I won't remember what I'm putting where. The damp weather up here means I'm able to move plants in full flower with no ill effects. Very handy

I think I'll start when the rain dies down to a drizzle ;D ... cheers ...

I have started my revamp. After cutting the lawns, doing the edges and weeding the borders, I decided to start my revamp. First of all I removed a tree that had died off, then I started removing some ivy that is growing on the fence. It looked good when it was first growing there as it gave some colour to the fence, but it has gone a bit wild and is choking other climbers nearby, so I decided it had to go. Will plant new climbers along that bit of fence when I have cleared it all.

Ivy is terrible to get rid of TCL, on a par with bindweed in my book Might need some drastic action.

Hlo....I hope to do some moving around tomorrow ;D Today I bought some lovely heleniums and an agistache at Barnsdale....
I'm planning to move a few of the cooler colours to one end of the border...having the hot colours at the end by the GH that is sunnier..I want to have the trachycarpus fortunei and humilis palms in with the hot colours as well....it all depends on the weather tomorrow...if it's really hot again I'll not move the established plants...
a gardener's work is never done....

I had a good move round last year and deepened some of the borders. I'm a bit disillusioned about it all though because nothing has done well in the borders because of the really poor horrid weather. To be honest I feel like starting all over again but will hold back Like the sound of the living gateway to the wild bit of your garden 4P. Ivy does make a good background on a fence but can get out of hand TCL I let some grow on one of my fences and I really have too keep it in check or it creaps all over the place CPB your sooooooo right a gardener's work is never done ;D

I have ivy in other parts of the garden that is smaller leafed and does not seem to get as out of control. The one I am removing has a large leave. Another problem is that it keeps shedding it's leaves onto the border. I know it will be difficult to remove, but I'll persevere.

Oh TCL, I wish I had your problem ... I have two of those large-leafed ivies that I grew from cuttings two-and-a-half years ago and I keep looking at them and saying "Grow, you &*&^%, GROW!"
Following WT's sensible point (obviously the voice of experience) about transplanting plants in damp weather, I carried out most of the re-vamp in rain-breaks Friday and Saturday - and feel soooo satisfied!
If all goes to plan, next year I will have eccremarcarpus as a backdrop, with a deep red hollyhock and a purple malva in front of it, red penstemon in the middle and lots of cannas towards the front; heuchera and viola labradorica right in the front. The malva is 'Magic Hollyhock' which I did not expect to flower until next year since I sowed it very late in the spring ... but it's growing like mad and has loads of buds - can't wait for them to open. Don't know if it'll all work out the way I hope ... but it's fun trying ... cheers ...

I started cutting down my ivy about 3 weeks ago, but never got chance to finish. So spent this afternoon continuing with the job. Cut it all down off the fence, then started trying to remove the stumps and roots. There were 3 of them, all been in the garden for nearly 13 years, so they were not little. To make matters worse, the roots had entwined with the roots of the Leylandii trees that grow in the garden on the other side of the fence. I nearly gave up, but persevered and finally managed to dig all 3 of them up. Feel quite pleased with myself.

i dug up a border last month because it never seemed to look right. i have a climbing fuchsia at the back and an apricot rose and have planted galega, scabious, grevillea, achillea, verbena, aquilegea, lysmachia, lobelia and tall thrift, and left a gap where i couldn't think what to plant so will probably drop in various pots to cover the spring and autumn gap. hope it looks better next year but probably i'll be moving thing again

Barbara..............In my opinion, a lawn is something you keep until you buy a lovely plant to replace it with ;D Having said that, my borders would look a great deal better with a beautiful lawn to show them off. Never going to happen though, I like flowers too much

My lawns are slowly receding too. When the children were small the garden was mainly lawn with narrow borders. Now it is getting so that it is mainly borders with narrow lawns! But it is nice to have some lawn to show off the borders.
