Hi Jardack, the first one is a hardy Geranium. The second is a Geum.

lol so i have been trying to pull the blooming things out thinking they were weeds and they aren't!.....
They are all over the garden, but I have never seen any flowers on them (and they've been left in various places as wasn't sure what they were)

Ooo I thought they looked like buttercups - I have these too and been pulling them up

The creeping buttercup is a real nuisance Jenny and it puts out runners as it spreads. I've got the Old Man's Whiskers type of geum and it spreads very quickly too

Well, they are weeds if you don't want them! The Geum especially, this species, is probably not very garden worthy. Do you have hardy geraniums which might have self-seeded?

I'll second the Geranium and I'd have those Geum/weeds out Jardack, they get everywhere They take some pulling out though and get in every nook and cranny if you let them. Best use a trowel, if I try and pull them they always break off

Thanks everyone
So, the last pic is the Geum - I will take that out as there isn't as much of that one....
The Geranium could have been there from the previous owners as we've only been here a year and all sorts of things keep appearing!. I will leave it for now and see if it flowers at all so I know what one it is. Plus this is a complete nightmare to get out, really stubborn and is in all the cracks of the rockery.

Morning Jardack, just a cautionary note re the geranium. I bought one little plant three years ago - it's now about three feet tall and is spreading itself liberally around the garden. It does look pretty when in flower - blue/purple in colour - and would be ideal in a cottage garden.

eeek Thanks Shrubrose
Don't want one that is 3 foot tall in the rockery methinks!
It is really spreading, it is all over the garden but its so hard to get out - the roots are really deep, I will leave the bits in the rockery as they don't seem to be growing up at the minute and see how it goes till next year.

those geums are a real nuisance as they look just like good ones but I guess it will be that little yellow flowered devil with hooks on its seeds that catch on to the cat. The geraniums look interesting though, they seem to cope whatever the weather brings so worth watching

I am taking the geum out and will watch the others to see how they go....

The top one looks like Herb Robert to me. It's a native geranium which gets everywhere if you let it.....

Herb Robert has finer leaves but the strong pung usually is a give away. I have some Geranium that did not flower this year amongst them the Giganteum(?) so it could be that one I have the little Geum in my garden both the yellow and the pinkish one and I love them. They are a good ground cover and the slugs don't like them. For a rockery both are not suitable I think. It's all up to personal liking I think. A weed is a plant in the wrong place.

Hi Dutchy
Why are they classed as not suitable for a rockery? Mine is growing inbetween all the rocks so will be a complete nightmare to move the rocks to dig them all out....
TIA

I still think they are native plants/weeds (depending on your point of view)! If not Herb Robert, then Cut leaved Geranium. And the other one looks like some sort of Mustard - maybe a type of Charlock. I'm not sure...sorry, I can't get the information to surface...it's in there somewhere....
