I'm surprised you've never had much luck with them Borderbabe - I can't seem to stop them growing !!
I usually collect seed in an envelope at this time of year and store it in a cool dry place over winter. If I'm on the ball I sow them around early March in a heated greenhouse and I generally just water them when the compost is dry. This usually does the trick for me but others may have better advice !

I do the same as F Andy, I make sure that I dont over water them--fatal. I water from below by putting the seed tray in water until it is just moist, then lift and drain. Keep well ventilated because they can get moldy'(damping off') and collapse. The first few years I just bought plug plants and potted them on and didn't sow seed much easier for a beginner. Good Luck with whatever you try.

I make sure that I dont over water them--fatal. Very good point - one I should have made in my previous post. I make sure I don't over-water them too. They prefer a bit of dryness to being soggy ! FA x

I usually pop them in the heated propagator to start them off, dont do them too early they get going fast & tend to leggyness. They do respond to watering if you let them nearly dry off.

I cover my seed with vermiculite instead of compost

Ive always bought mine but next year im also doing from seed so i will be taking advice that everyone has given. If we both do them at the same time BB maybe we could compare notes etc.
