How long do leaves take to rot down. I have had some in a black bin bag for about a year now but they don't seem to have changed at all. Should I be adding a compost activator? Would adding lime help?

I think the leaves do need to be wet before they are put in the bag, which should be tied and then perforated here and there around its surface,' I set up an enclosure of chicken wire to make a square about 1 cubic metre, no bottom or top. I then just throw all my leaves in and leave them, usually for the year. That makes yummy leafmold. I daresay that covering would speed up the process. At my age, a year doesn't seem like a long time to wait anymore

hi, a tip for making leaf mould, we have a sycamore tree in our garden and when the leaves fall we mow them with the lawn mower and this helps them decompose quicker, good luck

Fab idea to use the lawn mower MGF, I'll be tryng that one ;D
I usually fill black bin liners and puncture a few holes in them before I tie them up and squash all the air out of them. They then get piled up at the back of the shed and left for a year.
