Last night a rat was chased passed me out of the garden by my dog. This got OH and me talking about "how harmful are they?" He is of the opinion you can only catch Weill's disease through an open cut. I on the other hand think if Rat wee is touched unknowingly then ingested etc you could possibly be really . Does anyone have any information they could share please?

Pretty certain that it's highly unlikely to get Weils disease through injestion. Being a fisherman and having a large pond in the garden at work, i have to learn about such potential problems.
Flu like symptoms are the thing to watch out for but these can sometimes emerge up to 21 days after initial infecftion. The disease can often be confused with viral meningitis too.
It is fairly rare and only 10% of cases are fatal....but someone has to be that 10% i'm afraid.
Obviously discourage rats to start with but always wear shoes and socks in the garden and gloves when pottering around. Any open wounds should be washed and covered.
There's loads of info on the web...the above was off the top of my head.
Hope this helps a bit

Now I'm scared, this morining all I could hear was loud knawing coming from in the wall cavity by the outlet pipe from the upstairs toilet - even when I banged loudly on the wall the knawing carried on regardless, there has been a lot of roads down the town being dug up for underground water storage to aleiviate flooding. I'm scared I may become overun with them. I have put rodent poison in the loft.

Um, I haven't had a rat rant on here for a while (not going to start now.. : but I do urge you to get in touch with your local council's Pest Control Officer. If you can hear ANYTHING gnawing you have a problem........at this time of year rats will be trying to find nice dry quarters for the winter...PLEASE act now because they are hideous things and can do an inordinate amount of damage.......I'm sorry to be alarmist but I am alarmed! ;D
