Aphids do not like any of the onion family its the smell, I plant chives in the rose bed, reduces aphids and a constant supply of freshly chopped chives for the cheese sarnies at lunch time.

I've put chives around my fruit trees and will also put some in the veggie patch. Then I'm going to grow some near my roses.
My garlic chive seeds arrived today so I'll attack them with garlic and onion smells hehe

I've carried on using the Garlic water which started this thread off and it seems to have worked for me. Has anyone else used it or any of the other suggestions on here ? or maybe has a new one to add. UPDATE ok i'm loosing the plot just seen I posted on here yesterday with a similar post. Oh well I can blame this cold bug and my age

I have just been given a tip from a GH owner about White Fly and Nicandra physaloides or the Shoo-fly Plant/Apple-of-Peru Plant. Apparently this plant helps kill off white fly. It attracts them and the sap of the plant is poisonous for them and they then die. Has anyone tried this - apart from the fact that the plant and flower look rather nice, it seems it could also be a plus on the Bio - warfare front. RF

Nice one RF Got to be worth a try. It's quite pretty and I could just see it growing in the GH, nice big flowers too I've had no problems with insects this year, you wait now I've said Have used the Garlic spray especially when the plants were young. I've also had a couple of Lemon scented Geraniums in the GH between the Toms, Peppers and Cuc's, not sure if thats made any difference.

I was advised today to plant some of my garlic under the fruit trees as it will deter the sort of creepycrawlies that eat into the fruit.
I'm quite happy to try it, and wondered if there were any other plant forms of pest control (as distinct from the otherwise excellent 'companion planting' and crop rotation we've talked about)... eg I'm sure I saw something about deterring carrot root fly recently by planting the right thing alongside, but can't find it...

Well we have spoken about a garlic spray on the board but I was told to plant garlic near my roses to keep aphids away.
I wonder if it would work - lavender looks a little better though doesn't it.

I think Calendula/pot marigolds deter the carrot fly and should be sown at the same time OM.

Garlic Chives under Roses is another way and looks prettier than Garlic. Ordinary Chives are supposed to be good too. I can't grow Roses so I've never tested it though!

OM. Onions deter carrot fly and carrots deter onion fly OM I guess you know that the carrot fly flies very low, no more than 18" I think, so fine netting around the edge of your veg patch will work too.

Three years in a row I have bought Garlic Chive plants and they have all died, I am not quite sure what I did to them as I grow chives without a problem. I was told by a friend that chives, once a concoction/brew has been made from them, works very well against mildew, - I have never tried it though. RF

Over here you very often see a rose planted at the end of a row of vines, supposedly to attract pests away from the grapes - though tourists still stop and pick some if they think no-one is watching. They always are.

Blackfly love nasturtiums, grow them to keep the flies off other plants.

I do worry that planting some companion plants actually make things worse. This year on the allotment I planted nasturtiums and have been invaded by caterpillars

I have had a problem even germinating them sometimes. I think total neglect and indifference work the best. I planted a bought clump of Garlic Chives eventually and forgot about them, even planted Nepeta on top of them, amd they have been brilliant ever since - even outgrowing the self seeded English Marigolds... plus I do think they enjoyed the wetter summer this year.

My neighbour was told that she should plant tomatoes between her roses. I still haven't found out what it was suppose to help against but I must admit her roses looked splendid even if the overall sight was slightly bizarre.

This year on the allotment I planted nasturtiums and have been invaded by caterpillars As long as the caterpillars are eating the nasturtiums... they are planted as a sacrificial crop. Blackfly love them so they attack them instead of beans etc...

I not an expert but do think you could have a point there JL. My brussels were attacked worse than the nasturtiums planted next to them. Guess sometimes these things work better than other times

As I posted on my overwintering thread, I am sure that I have had more caterpillars this year after planting nasturtiums than any other year and I won't be growing them next year Marigolds along with the carrots seem to work and I am definitely going to grow some nettles to make an insecticide spray next year. The garlic spray worked up to a point but the smell was awful

My uncle always used old fashioned fly paper in the GH to help keep white fly and aphids under control, infact anything sticky and yellow is supposed to do the trick. He even tried it in the garden once but it caught other things as well, I am afraid.
