While helping do my freinds garden on Sunday the 4 of us were chatting about garden pests and there control. One thing that cropped up was Garlic Water. A simple thing really, crushed garlic cloves put into a sprayer then just add water and leave it to infuse. Just keep topping up with water and a few fresh cloves every now and again. Supposed to be good for allsort of bugs so I've set a sprayer up, watch out bugs ;D Anyone else got any gems to share in this thread

I don't know how 'natural' this is, but the copper wire thing really does seem to work. Despite an application of nematodes a few weeks ago, our garden is still the Irish Slug HQ - but I've surrounded a baby hosta with a copper collar - and there hasn't been a bite. Not one. In normal circumstances, the hosta would not have lasted a day ... cheers ...

I've just this minute started a thread about soda crystals, having missed this I'm going to give that garlic water a go Chuckles - that sounds excellent. I wonder if it will work with Wild Garlic though - using that instead of the cloves?

Can't see why you can't use Wild Garlic P, I guess it's the smell or taste the bugs don't like.
Early days I know but on Monday I used the Garlic water on a young black Hollyhock that I'd noticed had been nibbled by some little critter. It's in the Poly Kennel and I have mist it with the Garlic water everyday when I go in and check things, have not seen anymore damage.
If I were as slug the thought of salt and bran would keep me away too Rita ;D

re: Garlic Water. I was fed up with the cat "deposits" in my raised bed and I had a few cloves which were sprouting, so I chopped them up and poored boiling water on them, and then let the water cool down. I then strained the water into my watering can, watered it down slightly, and then watered the raised bed with it. That was about 2 weeks ago, and I haven't had any more cat "deposits" (yet!).
Do you know if it works sprayed onto plants to get rid of aphids?

I tried the bran theory (using All Bran) and it did work, but unfortunately one of my cats also took a liking to it and kept pinching it!!

Would it kill our friends as well as our foe?

what's the bran/oat theory? Slugs love it but they cannot digest it and they swell up and die, very effective.

Not sure about the aphid bagpuss but I found one of my pots of cuttings in the GH had GF on the surface of the compo, sprayed it and they all crawled out but will know better tomorrow if they crawled back ;D I don't think it will kill them but if it works as a repelent that's good enough for me. My GH pongs of garlic tonight ;D I have some oats left from my winter breakfasts and had thought about putting it on my Hosta pots but think the birds may get there first plus if it rains won't it go all mouldy

But the oats are organic and will still rot down naturally Chuckles.

ooooooooooh that's a good idea isn't it. Do you just put it down like slug pellets then? Knowing my luck, shads would just eat it

Garlic is also toxic to slugs and snails...so the garlic spray works on them too.
Garlic sprays works on a lot of pests including cabbage whites etc.

I tend to put it down in little piles Aprilaydee - the slugs gorge themselves to death on it ;D

I rub aphids to bits on my rosebuds ( not squeezing too hard or the rosebud would fail) It seems to keep new ones away for a while. Aphids don't like funerals I think.
Plocket how many gallons of wild garlic spray have you made yet?

I'm just topping up my sprayer as and when, got 3 cloves in it. Spray the seedlings in the GH every 2 days and it smells like a Garlic farm in there when I've been round ;D

I saw something on the Big Dig the other night I might try. If you grow rhubard put the leaves in an bucket and cover with water. Leave for a couple of weeks (it smells awful by all accounts!) but the cabbage white butterfly wont lays its eggs on your brasicca's - no caterpillers eating the leaves!

Thats sounds good for all you lottie lot with your Rhubarb patches. Think my neighbour has some Rhubarb, I'll have to ask her if she'll save me the leaves We'll all be organic gardeners before long

I didn't think it would rita cos it wouldn't swell up and kill them....damn lil things.
And technically, if/when the birds eat them, they'll get their roughage too!!

Right my garlic water has infused and I started spraying, only to have the blinkin sprayer clog up. I've tried cleaning it but to no avail - I think I'm going to have to buy a new one

would garlic granules work just as well or could I put garlic granules down? I mean as in the powdered stuff.

I would think Garlic granules or powder would work ok mixed in water and used as a spray. Maybe even neat would be fine but I think you would probably use more that way, what does anyone else think ? ? ?

Oooh I'll try it on greenfly too JL - that's a good tip.
I've been spraying my succeptible clematis in the evening before the slugs and snails come out so they get the full benefit of the garlic. I haven't worked out yet how many times I can refill the jar where the water is infusing though, I mean before the garlic flavour runs out.
