Don't know if it's the same in the UK, but DG seems to be ubiquitous at the moment - started off with a grden make-over programme, has lent his name to garden centres and has just come out with his own magazine - I bought the first issue yesterday. Massive advertising campaign for it on Irish TV. I am very grateful that I did not read this magazine when we were starting the garden, or I would have just given up - in one article, he suggests buying 'the biggest plants you can afford' and buying semi-mature trees ... although he does concede there might be difficulty carrying them through the house if one does not have rear access. It would cost thousands to make a garden the Gavin way!
And, despite this being prime cutting-taking and bulb-planting time, there was no a mention in the magazine of anything relating to propagation. At the end of the magazine is an extensive 'sourcebook' - presumably all the suppliers have paid and that's how the mag will make its money. This is one of two new gardening magazines launched in Ireland during the past while - the other, 'Garden Heaven', is stuffed with beautiful photographs, often of 'celebrity gardens', and is similarly uninformative.
None of this is about gardening - it's about extending a 'lifestyle' to the 'outdoor living space' which is quite a different thing.
OK, rant over ... cheers ...

I knew I'd spell that wrong!!! Never mind RM. You're just 'lottie loopy' at the moment, I'm sure ;D Re the magazine, Diarmuid's probably got a way to go before he retires. Income's probably feeding his pension fund, eh? Hope it gets better though in terms of content. I like glossy mag pictures but I do like them to be backed up with something of substance.

I haven't heard about any of this! What DG garden centres? What DG magazine? Whilst I find the man annoying I can't dispute his incredible contribution to gardening, particularly on the design side.

Well, I think he's been seduced by the Dark side......when he first appeared I enjoyed his programmes as I found them challenging and fresh but over the years he seems to have become more of a brand name and much less a gardener. I enjoyed his Chelsea gardens (I loved the mounds of Lavender in grass) and thought his series about training designers was interesting but nowadays I think most of his appearances are designed to advance Diarmuid Gavin and very little else....I haven't seen his magazine and although I might have a sneaky peak through it on the shelf in the shop, I shan't buy it! It's a shame - he really used to have a gardening heart and soul, maybe he still has but there's precious little of them on display.

I agree with you 4P, he probably still does have a gardening heart and soul but somehow this celeb status thing and I guess money seem to change some of these people. It's as if they can't still be seen as ordinary gardeners

Not sure if it's available in the UK, Plocket ... although, come to think of it, he probably wouldn't let the opportunity to get at such a huge market slip by - there can't be a whole lot of money in Irish magazines (oh dear, my anti-DG prejudices are showing ;D) ... cheers ...

Don't worry Plocket, you haven't missed anything informative ;D ... opened the Sunday supplements this morning, and DG was all over them in ads for a new golf resort in Portugal for which he's designed the gardens ... I must be missing something here ... cheers ...

Hello Plocket, CC,
yeah, I'm sick of those golf resort ads. Fed bluddy up with them, I am!
CC, Clondalkingardener emailed me last week to let me know he was at a show in Tallaght. It was in some hotel. Two sessions, the second of which was cancelled. Not many (proper)gardeners, CG asked her few questions and got good answers. I didn't go, I didn't see her email till it was too late. I'd not have gone anyway!!!
I haven't seen his magazine. I do agree about the Garden Heaven one. I like the Irish Gardener one, and bought it for a whole year a few years ago! It went up in price a lot, in the changeover to the euro. I have a quick glance if I'm in a newsagents, but it is available in both my local libraries, in fact, they throw them out after a few months. I got a couple a couple of years ago. I've moved on from skip skavaging to rooting through my local library's rubbish!!! (well, one time)

Hiya Plocket, I'm well. How are you keeping. All quiet here. I've been helping the fella next door tidy up his back garden. Two skips worth of junk is what we got out of it. His dad took a 'turn' recently, and he wanted to tidy up before the Home Help came to survey the living quarters before they let the old man home. It is a disaster area. I shouldn't say much, my pic is in the gallery!!! I did put some junk in the skip and return to resue it <guiltysmiley> I have been wasting a lot of my time on www.boards.ie, in the After Hours forum mostly. Just surfin' and chillin'. I still lurk on the bbc board, but with the 3 min rule, it's a pain to post. Not that it would stop me if I had 'important stuff' to say. I saw DG's magazine yesterday, later. yes, it's really Design led. I didn't even open it up! Glossy though! I took a break from here, and for a couple of weeks on the bbc board. There was a bit of a misunderstanding and I kindof upset PrincessAnabanana. I read her post about Flickr hosted photos, the very weekend I had transferred my yahoo photo albums. I think I freaked her out by commenting on one of her pix, using another pseudonym. Of course I knew it was me, but she was so shocked she deleted her album. I felt SO guilty. Clondalkingardener has found a second source of horse 'muck' which she passed on to me. The contact, not the, er.... He only delivers on Wednesdays, so I'll call him next week. I was so tempted to pick my rhubarb in late August and September. It looked wonderful. Hopefully I'll be rewarded next year. The thing I learned this year, is that if you pick it, you get more. Is that right? And CC, Eric Byrne did a little job for me recently, so I'm happy about that. I met him at the Wood Quay offices recently at the Tidy Town awards and thanked him, plus sent him a thank you email. The SCR plot of the dolphinsbarngarden.org site did very well this year. Several people have left the country, but there's fresh blood to keep it going. The summer was dreadful, but at least the plants were watered. will talk soon. C.

I have never like DG (can't be bothered to check spelling). I remember his livfestyle programmes on TV which have nothing to do with gardening. His Chelsea Garden entry ( a few years ago) lollpops of coloured was in appallingly bad taste. I really thought he was taking the p*** out of the show itself. At the time I knows he didn't even own his own garden. I always shouted at the telly when he was on, glad he is only on Irish telly. You may think I am being non-PC - nothing can be further from the truth - my OH is from the Republic and I go there every year tol visit his family. I just can't stand DG, or Terry Wogan for that matter!! ;D ;D
