Like many people, my parents bought a water butt at the beginning of this year, anticipating another long hot dry summer and thinking that they could attach a hose to it to water the garden as at nearly 80 they're starting to find it difficult to carry lots of watering cans about. This year of course the butt has overflowed all over their patio, and they found they couldn't attach the hose to it to run off the water because it only has a plastic tap without a proper screw - so they've spent all year carrying cans of water from the butt up the garden to stop the patio flooding. Anyone else solved this problem or have any bright ideas about how they could attach the hose to the butt? It's a Blackwall water butt if that makes any difference.

You used to be able to get hose attachments that pushed onto a tap Juliet. Had a google and found this www.wilkinsonplus.com/invt/0182215Not sure what the taps are like on water butts, but for £1.49 it's got to be worth a try I remember using them before I had an outside tap. Many a time I had the tap turned on to far and the water pressure would start to push it off and spray water all over the place ;D I used to feel the loss of pressure in the hose and dash into the house ;D

Hi Chuckles, thanks for the idea - don't know why I didn't think of that: I used to have one of those when we lived in a rented flat and didn't have plumbing for the washing machine ... had to sit in the kitchen while I did the washing so I could turn the tap on every time the machine needed to fill and off again whenever it had finished filling, because as you say, they do tend to leak & spray everywhere if there's too much water pressure! I'll suggest it to my parents - have several other ideas from people on the Beeb too, so hopefully they'll find something which works!

Hi Rita,
The water butt is attached by a rainwater diverter to the downpipe - but while it diverts water from the downpipe into the water butt, it doesn't divert it back into the downpipe when the water butt is full. I'm wondering whether the diverter is faulty or has been fitted incorrectly (mum & dad didn't fit it themselves, so no idea whether the person who did it knew what he was doing). Pump definitely sounds possible - someone on the Beeb suggested that too. Your final link doesn't work for me though, I'm afraid.
