Don't know which way you intend to go? But I started working for someone I knew , as a gardener, and it blossomed (well, it would ). I have been asked to do gardens from scratch sometimes too. But perhaps you are thinking of college? Sorry, I have no formal education, but cannot advise you there.

There is a few options open to you Gee. I don't know what qualifications you have but an NVQ or city and guilds in horticulture usually looks good on a CV.
You could work in a garden centre or nursery but the pay is usually poor and the work is often boring or repetative and it's often seasonal too.
If it was me, i'd considder setting up a little business....starting with evenings and weekends until you get a decent round and can afford to go full time. There is so much work out there, especially since the Titchmarsh/Dimmock revolution and by getting a couple of weekend gardening jobs, and doing a good gob for them, word of mouth will get you the rest. There are also contracts out there....nursing homes, offices and shopping centres all need garden maintenance and when you're doing your work, take photos to build up a portfolio to show future customers.
You will obviously need to go into it a bit deeper...you'll need a bit of cash to start with for a van, mower, strimmer, hedge trimmer etc etc but if you're prepared to do it, you'll make a fortune.....especially as most gardeners charge anywhere between £10-£20 an hour !!!
Good luck and if there's anything else i can help you with or the above isn't really for you, let us know.
Andy
