I can safely say, that no-one has ever been so generous. He is a total stranger too. I was just delivering something. Guess the chooks are just meant to be. And there was me feeling down in the dumps!

Not yet, because I'll need my SIL to pull my trailer. I used to have a tow-hitch on my wee Mini, but I've changed to a Smart car, and I can't get one for that. Sadly, he won't have a day off till after Christmas, and the man who is giving me the henhouse is going away to his other house till the middle of January. You know, it seems so good to be true, that I am wondering if I have misunderstood actually what i am getting. I don't think so, but who gives a total stranger, £600 of equipment?

As Shrubrose felt a little guilty talking chickens in my garden thread, I thought I'd start another here. Any one else got some? These are my two buff Columbian Brahma's Doris and Clarissa.

Those are gorgeous, you lucky girl. Before you joined, I told the tale of how a total stranger offered me one of those Eglu cubes for free, because I was enthusiastic about his chickens. I collected it on Wednesday night, though I won't be able to buy the chickens till I work out where I will put them. I'll have to rearrange the garden somehow, over the course of this year. I can't let them roam free, but I want to give them as much space a possible. Cannot wait. ;D

Oh Amo they are georgous, what colour eggs do you get from them? I have some Warrens (7) and Rhode Island Red(1) and 4 WarrenXRhodie. 1 is called WeeT as it has white tips on its wings. I was told that you could'nt breed off Warrens as they are a hybrid but 1 went broodie last year so we put some eggs under just to try and 5 hatched as a result.

Just normal pale brown ones when they feel like laying. And they're quite small for one of the largest breeds. We don't mind though OH doesn't eat eggs unless they are cunningly disguised ;D They a fab poached though.

Ooo thanks for starting this thread Amo ;D I had three girls - Queenie, Vicky and Littl'un. Sadly they got picked off one by one before and after Christmas by a wily fox who waited till they got back to their roost and then nabbed them before we'd closed them down for the night.
I shall get some more but I'll leave it now until late spring and lighter nights and we'll be around more.
Your's are absolute stunners! And I love their names, Doris especially. I wonder why we tend to pick such old fashioned names for them? But they do suit them dont they for some reason ;D
Are they erratic layers then? (You might already have answered that on the other thread; I'll go check it out). What do you feed them on?
I found that when they moulted it interrupted them laying, other wise the Blues were wonderful. We had far more eggs than the two of us could eat and ended up giving them away.
As you've gathered I could talk about them all day!!!!
WeeT, they will bring you so much pleasure as well as add to the larder. ;D

Morning Amo, I had just about decided not to get any more chickens this year (only one very ancient old lady left now) as I am soo tired of battling the rodent hordes. It wasn't an easy decision to make as I love my girls and have kept some in my garden for the last 25 years. I think I might have changed my mind after seeing your photo though! I love Brahmas - and yours are so pretty.......I haven't ever kept that breed - I've had Buff Orpingtons, Cuckoo Marans, RIR, Welsummers, Black Rocks plus a few more I can't remember atm Oh dear...shall I? Shan't I? I dunno now......... ;D Forgot to say: Shrubrose - mine all have had old fashioned names too! Amongst others, Hilda, Tilda, Beryl (ah, my lovely Beryl), The Duchess, and my goats too: Mary, Mabel, Ivy and Fred! I wonder why......

Sorry to hear about your chickens Shrub...I knew about the first casualty but not the others. Thanks Missy! I knew once Queenie had been nabbed we might lose the others. We weren't complacent as we've always made sure they were safe at night. And we used to have a dog who was in the garden during the day so we think she kept the fox at bay but she died about a year ago. 4P, those are great names. I reckon we call them by old fashioned names because they look 'old fashioned' the way they strut around! Very stately sometimes, dont you think? Until they run. That always makes me giggle. They're just such lovely creatures to watch around the garden. I know what Amo means when she says they're 'living statues' ;D

They do have HUGE bloomers, just like those old fashioned panties you used to have for over babies nappies!!! I couldn't believe how many varieties there were, and they're all fun, but we wanted ones that were heavy enough not to fly. OH also like their scarves! They are a bit erratic in their laying but we don't mind. They really do earn their keep in the winter routing out all the pests they can find. They did discover tomatoes in the greenhouse this year which they thoroughly enjoyed!! I do think that the having a dog in the garden does do a lot to help to Shrub. And as for the rodents, OH doesn't mind, he needs the practise.
