Jenny it wasn't the 'Little Red Hen' series of books was it, also included a pig, duck, cat and goose I think?
Anyway - back to real chucks - my Dad kept them from just after the war until 1960's, then started again in his 70's. I have one of his old books somewhere - it has some nice illustrations in it. As a child, I had my own bantams and sold the eggs for pocket money.

As a child, I had my own bantams and sold the eggs for pocket money. That's why my OH doesn't like eggs. His Mum and Dad had chickens and he had to eat eggs in some form or another at nearly every meal. And his mum was not a very good cook.

My Aunt had lots of them and I had to collect eggs when I stayed there - I was about 10 years old and it scares the life out of me - but it was always so warm and peaceful in the Hen House I had to shoo them out before I dare collect the eggs I think the sound of a clucking hen is really relaxing <sigh> She had a cockerel too that woke everyone up at 5am but then on her farm they all got up at that time anyway

I knew it would happen My neighbour, who complains about everything and likes to think she owns the place, has made her views known on my buying a couple of chickens. She says it is in my house deeds that livestock is not allowed. It would surprise me if that were true, because I am quite sure that the original tenants of these cottages would be self sufficient and would have hens. So I'll have to get the deeds from my lawyer to find out the truth. Guess who won't be getting a nice box of free-range eggs on her doorstep. ;D

my enemies enemy is my friend, dear wee, we had a coquerel and his missus, i believe it was the only sociopathe coquerel i've ever had the misfortune to meet. any male or small child in the area took their life and genetalia in their hands. so, thus the day arrived, builder having a quiet pee.......boom syd,as he was known, had a go at afore mentioned peeing builder, was attacked leaving no time for zipping fly, etc etc. was soooo shoked kicked it the head swore in french and ran away. husband returns from work this was the real daddy. same senario returns. we put it to the vote as a family daddy said it s me or the coquerel, children vote, our only male animal, daddy leaves home; my sister and i were then obliged to relocate afore mentioned animal, in a neighbors field with success when it was dark. not so long afterwards nancy his girlfriend and 3 plymouth rock chickens were sourced by a fox and fed to her pups, haven't had the heart to get more miss them though

What happened with the chuck house Wee, or shouldn't I ask. I may be having a couple, well me and my lovely neighbour. Have just read through this thread to get an idea on breeds. My neighbour went to the local cattle market on Tuesday just for a look and we are going together next Tuesday, to possibly buy ;D We'll have a small house to start with and a small run, then we may expand On here folk mention these breeds and characteristics........ Marans Cuckoo Marans, big brown eggs Orpingtons, gentle, can get broody Rhode Island Reds Warrens, commercial breed Blue Belles, placid big birds, big eggs Any other suggestions

You gotta have Bantams, they are small and sweet, they only lay little eggs but they taste fantastic.

Oooo, Chucks is getting some chucks! ;D
Can I lobby for Blues Chuckles? They are such lovely hens - big girlies and they do lay (mine laid daily even through winter) fabulous BIG eggs with the most orange yolk. They do big 'poos' too - great fertiliser ;D And they like company - they'll follow you round and cluck, cluck, cluck at you all the time.
UP THE BLUES! ;D

Sorry Chuckles, not to reply. I am only managing to get a connection for about 30 mins a day at the moment. I have put the chickens on a back burner ( ) because My neighbour, not the lovely one who is not actually right next door, would not be happy. She is never happy about anything I do. Because I have trees and won't cut them down for her so she can sunbathe. In Scotland. I never know from day to day how my folks are going to be, so I could suddenly find myself with two invalids to care for. Maybe I have enough responsibility at the moment. I'm using the proposed chicken ground for trying veg this year. However, I WILL have them one day. And good luck with your plans. Being able to lift a big fat warm feathery hen must be one of life's great pleasures.

Oh Wee! Never mind eh? At least you're putting the planned area to good use and you'll enjoy veggie growing I'm sure. You'll get your chucks one day.

Warrens are nice little girls, and bred to produce a lot of eggs Cuckoo Marans lay lovely eggs, but don't get a cockerel! They are HUGE!!!! ;D But relatively placid - not like bantam cocks wanting to fight everyone!!! ;D

Oh Wee sorry to hear that bloody neighbours You'll have to virtually share with me and the other chicken owners on here. Not the same I know so fingers crossed things change for you. Progress my end is slow atm. We have a little chicken house now and plan to make a run in a couple of weeks time. We've sort of got a short list of breeds atm but that could change as we search for a reputable supplier. I'll keep you all posted as things take shape

I'll be able to share your pleasure in this virtual world. If the veg don't work well this year, I'll use the area for chickens, and to hell with the neighbour. After all, they will be enclosed so shouldn't bother her in the slightest. All my other neighbours were keen for me to get chickens.
