Few simple things for the kids to have a go with....please feel free to add your own.
1) If you get an orange, satsuma, lemon, grapefruit or clemantine pip....just plant it in a small pot in some potting compost and wait for 6-8 weeks. They're fairly slow growing but it's fun for the kiddies. Don't ever expect it to flower or fruit though. Can be done at any time of the year.
2) Get a few apple pips, chuck them in a pot of compost then leave them outside in the cold to stratify. In spring, bring them into the warm and see if they come up. As with the citrus above, they'll never flower or fruit but would possibly make a nice bonsai subject or just a bit of fun. Best done around now.
Any more ?

How about planting some Acorns, Chestnuts, etc? Any type of nut will do plus the kids can plant the trees out when they get bigger.

I used to love doing the broad bean thing in school, I expect all schools did it. The thing where you get a big jamjar, line it fully with wet blotting paper, then push a soaked bean down between the paper and the glass? Not gardening, sorry, but I am remembering growing crystals of Potassium Permanganate and Copper Sulphide crystals (Or Copper sulphate, can't remember). Also, I remember having fun growing the tops cut from carrots and pineapples. Well, in my day, we were rather desperate

LP did acorns earlier this year and they are just starting to germinate now. Her Grandma has promised she will give them space in her garden when they are big enough ;D
