bonjour from SWfrance , we have just over 6acres of park & woodland, south facing with a rare collection of aged trees< 8magnolia grandiflora, tulip trees, a small ash forest< french plane, indian bean trees, french oaks, sycamore, three promiscuous "bambouseries", and other bits & bobs. when we arrived (3yrs ago), the garden had been abandoned for over 70yrs. there were bramble walls as tall as the eiffel tower & the shallow lake was permanent mardi gras for the mosquitos. so we got goats and various tractor accessories and seriously perforated body parts (thanks to the brambles), and now all is calm. we are still clearing saplings, mainly sycamore, but does anyone have suggestions for self propagating plants that like a bit of forest? thanx

Welcome SS....but how dare you tell us about such wonderful surroundings without providing pictures You ask about "self propagating plants" that like a bit of forest....do you mean more trees, or shrubs or ground cover stuff. What soil are you on too ? Andy

soil type : beautiful, pagan scented loam based forest crumble with the parks sitting above on a gypsum cliff face palms and primroses grow side by side i'd like seeds that i can throw and grow, someone once told me that there are 7 layers to a forest i'd like ground cover, shrubs and maybe wee trees, maybe edible things, have nuts: walnuts, hazel, cobs thanx

How is Foxglove doing in your area?
I have seen a German forest in the south covered in them. Quite a sight.
Defenitely get some eddibles they are such fun when you wander through the woods.

Mmmmm...loads of potential....lots of bluebells for spring, woodland anemones, wildflowers (foxgloves already mentioned), poppies ? . Don't know if you will get away with Rhododendrons...especially the wild purple variety. Lots of trees for autumn colour and for wildlife...hawthorn, pyrecantha, wild honey suckle, cottoneaster plus some sweet chestnuts (castanea sativa) and some meddlars. Damsons, cherries and other fruits would do well....and don't forget a big bramble patch for the blackberries.
There's a few to pick the bones through.
Andy
