small short & smelly, tall and gangly but with potential, invisible but invasive, succulent but high maintenance, what plant are you? are you edible, therefore recyclable? are you stoic and have n't moved for 4,768 yrs (methuselah< california), are you scented only in the evening (u know)? or are you there for ever (acanthus mollis) prehistoric .... how do you feel ?......

That's a very interesting question.
Just on the spur of the moment, I think it would have to be an English Oak.
Strong and reliable, but perhaps not very exciting! ;D

exciting is not the most rewarding, think big, sir walter raleigh on his boat of oak, pudding lane, all built on the back of an english oak, being a scots woman, we have pine, spruce and herring that bolsters our nations economics (gordon in england, i here he thinks heather is a fine plant, if not for the whisky then for the honey) an english is fine choice, better start sowing now!!

English Oak is the first thing that came to mind.
Don't read too much into it. Had I thought about it too deeply I wouldn't have been able to make up my mind.

am thinking > desert island plants; your top 5 plants, a gardening luxury, obviously a garden bible all to be taken with you on your very only garden desert island 1. to eat mmmm luv a mangetout or maybe strawberry 2. to look at, perhaps a perennial morning glory for daily delight 3. to smell, a white jasmine 4. a mango grove, just cause 5. and for impact a circle royal palms and for my bible a RHS book of everything

Without giving this too much thought, because it would get complicated, I would say I'm a Silver Birch. I am solid and reliable, but with a bit of give and flightiness. I give protection but don't overshadow. I'm relatively slim (but with age, becoming less so ). And I am very good at sustaining wildlife. I'd rather be a pretty flower though

Ooh, good question! I think I'd be an old rose, attractive for a few weeks, thorny and prone to spots!

I think I'd by Ivy. I don't smell. I can look attractive sometimes with a bit of special care. I'm useful and clever. I can be nosy and a pain in the bum.

quote : show me your garden and i shall show you what you are alfred austin poet laureate 1896 etc etc Lol wouldn't like to have my garden "read" Poppies are my favourite flower, all that energy put into maybe just one or two beautiful days to flower and then leave seed in the ground that can last for up to 80 years - what a legacy

Oh I like that quote ScottishSandra - that's lovely. I'm going to sound so smug when I say this, but I LOVE my garden, but I can quite safely say I am NOT small ;D
It's an interesting theory though - perhaps we should ask people to describe their gardens in one sentance, and see what they come up with!
