Hubby wentto the tip last weekend. he came back and excitedly reported to me that they are selling bags of their home made compost. 2 pound a bag!!! we all have green bins around here where we can put green garden waste and certain types of cardboard. i am all for a bargain and want to go and by 20 quids worth quickly. my concern is . i have no idea exactly what has gone into the green waste. as a lot of people had blight last year im sure a lot of blighted tomato plants etc went into it. as well as other diseased plants. and of course weeds and insects. is blight killed in the composting process.? is it worth buying this compost or will i end up with a garden full of weeds and bugs and diseases!! what do you all think? ? xx

That is the problem RBJ....you might want to give them a ring and ask to be put through to their parks dept and ask if the soil has been sterilized....and if not, why are you in effect, promoting the spread of weeds as well as the possibility of pests and diseases. It's not Brighton council is it ?

Our council give the compost away free. They dump it at a designated place and you go along with your bags and shovel and take it. Last year it was supposed to be 2 bags each, but there was nobody checking, so some people were greedy. I got 2 bags and it was quite good stuff. They also do a scheme where, if you take your garden waste to the tip, they give you a voucher for free compost. I haven't done that though - it is easier for me to recyle through the kerbside collection scheme.

here in france, the state give you a composter, very effective, socialist, nice roundabouts etc. everything you give gets recycled, the most difficult are the evergreens, more toxins, difficult to compost. the soil that we can buy is often very dark, (good for artichokes, asparagus etc), but has to be mixed with leaf mould, perhaps the best thing to do is to get a soil testing kit, then you can check where to put it.
