RSPB garden birdwatch takes place this weekend. Usually happpens twice a year. They want people to spend one hour over next weekend counting number of species of birds that come into your gardens. If you can on this website you can find out more infor and print out a counting sheet. www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch/I just sit down in my kitchen and watch from my window. Last year I saw 4 jays, sparrows, bluetits, coal tits etc. You are only allowed to count the num ber of species of birds you see at one time during the hour. So if you see two sparrows in the garden and they fly away and you see another sparow on its own you can't count that as 3 as one of them might be the same bird you saw before. If you are very keen you can spend as many hours as you like but only record the best numbers in just the one hour. I think it would be good fun for children to do as well. Some places have got organised watches. I went to one in a very old overgrown churchyard in 2006 - the big excitement was a nuthatch. Good luck PJ I forgot to mention, obvious really but it is good to put out extra feeders, so if you are not feeding any birds at the moment, it might be a good idea to put some out before the weekend. I realise now I should have postged this much earlier.

I do this every year with my mother (she knows more than me about birds)and smallest (8). She absolutely loves it. We sit in the conservatory (have to clean the windows...). Last year she set out chairs, cleared a table top and made us bring in a tray of tea and biscuits. It is a very interesting exercise anyway as it's amazing how many different types of birds are in the garden. Please do it if you have an hour spare. You can fill in a form online.

The NABU - Naturschutzbund Deutschland has started in the last few years to do a count a couple of times a year as well. We joined in last time - well just kept a look out and I reckon the birds didn't want to be counted - they had gone on holiday it seems.....

I'm waiting till tomorrow the wind blew the feeding table down & any self respecting bird will have hidden away till it could fly in a straight line.

PJ, hope you dont mind me posting this on here but for anyone who's interested in or concerned about climate change, the bill is going through parliament at the mo. The RSPB are asking for support. Only takes a minute to send an email to your MP. I've put the link below and go to 'Send a Climate Valentine' www.rspb.org.uk/

I don't know what happened to my birds but I sat down at 11am yesterday and waited and waited and waited and waited..........Nothing. Not a single bird landed in my garden in an hour, even though there was bread, seed and nuts out for them.
I was going to do the count today instead but unfortunately, we didn't get time.

I think the birds knew we were waiting to count them, because, although I had a few visit my garden when I was doing my count, I didn't see as many as I normally see. Either that or they had all gone out for the day!!

They always know they're being counted. The first year we did it we got two starlings (in an hour!). This year, we recorded 14 species - which is about half the garden's total count, but swallows and swifts are a bit unlikely at this time of year!
The web site has been speeded up a lot over the years. It took about a week before I could get on the first year we logged the results on line!
