When the children were little we used to go every year. Usually Cornwall (here...where's Dee gone? haven't seen her about for ages), Somerset, Dorset and Devon.
Nowadays I like static caravans more than tents...not keen on B&B or Hotels either altho OH likes them.

Love caravanning. Had a lovely few days at a site near Birmingham in June the last couple of years and combined it with Gardeners' World Live. Love the Kintyre Peninsula. And Kent. And Devon and Cornwall. And Yorkshire

Im with you on this one much prefer a static caravan, just unpack none of the danger involved in towing a van down the motorway in high winds.... that was tooo scarey!

It wasnt Barmouth was it? I went there in August one year, and the tent was destroyed by high winds on the first night,(my Birthday) I spent the rest of the holiday sewing it back together with waxed cotton, I wouldnt give up my holiday...already paid for!

:)I was just about to click the post reply button when we had another power cut . Why did we put the battery powered camping lights in the loft!!! If at first you don't succeed.... We did family camping for the first time last year. As the children are small we opted for a Park Resorts site in Great Yarmouth. They have big sites with bar, entertainments, on site shop and leisure activities, all very reasonable when you consider the prices at a caravan/ chalet only site. The nearest I can find in the brochure is Camber Sands, not sure of the mileage, but I stumbled on a cycle tour that includes both in the trip, so can't be that far away. We ended up with a 9 man tent for 5 of us, can't wait to use it again next year. We fancy the New Forest We've looked into tourers and trailer tents, but until I'm convinced we will be doing this regularly I won't be bidding for one on Ebay yet! Plus I loved the camping experience, it was so cosy

We are, or rather were, very big on canvas camping. We have two tents, a lightweight "slug" type for freestyle camping halfway up mountains and the like and a Kyham "quick erect" tent for conventional camping. The latter's ace! You erect it in 30 seconds - Needless to say we nicknamed it "Viagra"! We now want a Kyham multi-pod version. This let's you buy the living area of the tent plus as many sleeping pods as you wish that can be ingeneously tacked on to the external wall. Great if you have unexpected additions to the family Nowadays our main holidays are independently organised in static "cottage" caravans in France. We have found that if you choose your dates carefully the prices are almost as competitive as taking your own tent.

I used to love camping - especially in North Wales - not caravanning. As I get older the idea of a hippy camper van is more appealing - smallest daughter's idea of heaven. Once spent the night on a site on Lake Bala being terrorised by a creature doing the wall of death round the inside of our bedroom liner for hours. I was terrified it was a rat (or 23) so woke up OH in a panic (I was curled in a foetal ball deep inside the sleeping bag protecting my darling child). I had visions of it chewing my face (1984 like AARGH!) but it was a very silly hedgehog. OH laughed like a drain and then went back to sleep (the b*****D) WITHOUT getting it out. Daughter and I slept in the car after that......um, haven't been camping since funnily enough.

The only camping I did was with the Girl Guides so that really was canvas camping! These days I prefer a few home comforts and we tend to rent cottages. I can still knock up a mean gadget though!!! ;D
