Today I bought an Olympus FE 160 and very good it is too...until I tried to download the software. I've done this before so I'm not an idiot.....BUT it keeps telling me it can't load InstallShield Scripting Runtime. What the heck is that?? I thought it might be something to do with my firewall so I gave it access but it still won't work. PLease can someone very clever out there explain what's wrong in very simple language....?

Der...right...um. I'll try that then. Thanks Sleepy. I'm terrified of killing everything! I have got software installed for my old camera. It won't interface and create a black hole down which all my stunning pictures of the floor and the dog's a**e will disappear then?

4P Jeffers says 'disconnect the camera and switch off the pooter, then switch it back on, reconnect the camera and see what it says on the bottom of the screen when it's reconnected...if it says 'new device/hardware found' wait to see if it has installed it and it should tell you to switch off again.....
Windows should recognise that the camera is there apparently.. I know not what the hell he's talking about...if it says the device is not recognised then you';ll have to install the cd...that should update the necessary drivers (!?)
......he's ranting at me and I'm typing as he talks....talk to SS...he's a pooter buff! bumfxxx

sorry about that everyone...OH was talking technical and telling me to tell Myrt to do all sorts of computery type stuff....had to show him that I have utmost faith in his abilities and am stunned not only by his good looks, muscles and brain...but also in his computer skills... anything for a quiet life ;D

Probably. And it will probably suck your house and all your loved ones into the same black void seconds later too! Oh sleepy I wish you wouldn't say things like that because it made me laugh so hard my belly hurts now, then I laughed again thinking what 4P's face would have looked like when she read it

Did you get a manual with the camera? If not you can download a .pdf version from this site which is also the same site as you would download any drivers from. I am not familiar with the runtime error, and Microsoft's explanation see link leaves me none the wiser, and indeed I have to defer to Sleepy's superior knowledge on this.

O.....M.......G........! I did that thing you said Sleepy and it is working now BUT if it hasn't installed the correct software does this mean I can't use my extra memory card? I DO NOT LIKE THESE INFERNAL MACHINES! P'raps it already HAS sucked my brain out....that would explain quite a lot........ I would like CPB's beloved, Sleepy and Spruance to beam over here now please......(acshully CPB can come to and we could finish my birthday cake and have a glass of port or two while you lot sort it all out).

If you have successfully downloaded the software 4P it should 'reveal itself' when you connect your camera to the PC.
You should have received a USB lead with the camera. Without switching the camera on, connect the small end to the camera and plug the larger end into a spare USB port on your PC. Now switch the camera on and the PC should recognise your camera as a new hardware device. This should also prompt the software to recognise the camera, and, fingers crossed, you should be ok.
BTW, before disconnecting the camera from the PC, it is best to click the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon on the bottom right toolbar. This will disconnect the camera and indicate that it is safe to unplug the cable. Failing this, switch the camera off and remove the PC USB cable first.

Oo! OO! OOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I think I've got it (and the software's installed!) Sleepy I have blonde hair - is this relevant? And I bought an extra memory card cos the nice young man said I should! PS I have actually taken a piccie of myself (wearing OH's dressing gown, sadly) and it's worked! COO!

Sorted? I'm not sure that's an accurate description! I managed to download a photo of me at 10pm last night but I have no idea how I did it and now I'm struggling again. Ho hum. I think I'll start a blog about the trials of a computer twerp (blonde)....wouldn't that be thrilling? Lots of blank spaces and colourful metaphors!

Thank you Sleepy. I think my problem is really that I have no idea how these machines work so I don't understand why I'm doing something. I do like to understand things! I sort of half think there are a lot of pixies toiling behind the boxes and screens! Tragic but true.....I am entirely self taught (?...) with this pooter so I'm always fumbling about clicking buttons hopefully! My middle daughter is a computer whiz but is away at Uni and always much too busy to explain things to her bewildered mother when she pops up to demand money off me every few weeks! I sit on my low tech wooden stool while she tells me to click this, this and this. She actually expects me to remember AND understand this form of tuition......eldest daughter is also quite techy but seldoms visits without a trail of small children so it's impossible to concentrate. Besides I do NOT want a mixed array of Marmite, baby sick or other toxic substances on my keyboard (obviously love it everywhere else though...). I have to try and get my new scanner/printer/copier up and running this weekend too - prepare for a new lengthy series of puzzled shrieks and moans (but not in a good way). Their father was a IT lecturer would you believe! Only time I ever wish I could speak to him is when I'm struggling with this machine - I won't though as it would just be another reason for him to feel superior! Have a good day Sleepy! X

Well I think you did brilliantly, so there. And I think that Sleepy and Spruance are absolutely lovely for helping. Here 4P...you think that you've got problems...OH is at this moment in time drilling holes in the wall between house and garage (ooh you should see the size of his masonry bit...)...there are yards of cable and connecters all over the shop...and he's going to network this pooter and the one we use for astronomical imaging....um...might not be on the mb for a bit then... ;D

Morning CPB! I think they're lovely too but I have a feeling I may be testing their patience for a while longer! I just installed my new printer/scanner/copier and it won't scan! I've been on the trouble shooting guide and I think it's all wired up /plugged in correctly but I get no All-in-One centre guide on the screen so I can't do anything....Your dearly beloved just likes tinkering with drills, wires and machinery - lucky you! Mine thinks all technology is a waste of time (apart from a mobile phone and he struggles with them....). I want a techno fairy to come and fix mine NOW! Sigh.....

Double sigh...right, I've now uninstalled my old printer, checked all the connections AGAIN and now my computer is telling me that there is no connection betwen the new machine and the pooter! Is it me? Could it be the cable that doesn't work? I actually used the old cable to plug in the new machine - is that the problem? No one told me I needed to buy a cable, I thought it came with the printer so to try and avoid another 25mile round trip I thought I'd just plug in the old one........my head is beginning to ache. And I'm granddaughter sitting and friend's dog sitting all day and overnight, and they aren't getting on very well......and it's nearly b***y Christmas.......and I wanted to enter the photo compy but won't be able to now because I can't get the SCANNER TO WORK!!!!

Sorry to hear you're still having problems 4P. As Sleepy said earlier, don't worry about not knowing how things work. We've all been there and some of us (i.e. yours truly) still have a lot to learn. The thing is, the more you use computers, the easier it gets, and this gives you the confidence to be more adventurous. Anyway, back to the matter in hand, what is the make and model of your all-in-one device? It may be down to the connecting cable, but there might be another reason that you haven't thought of. Oh, and what operating system does your PC have, i.e. Windows XP or ME or Vista etc.

Good Evening, my brain is getting fried as I've been wrestling with this all day in between refereeing 2 small girls. My machine is a Lexmark 2400. My PC is Windows XP. I had a quick chat with techy daughter who seems to think it's my connecting cable probably. I'm also trying to get some decent pic for the competition. I have a recent one which looks like me (unfortunately - I was trying for a youthful Bardot!). Trying to get some shots of my baby pic without a load of flash interference. I'm not cut out for the world of modern technology.....but I really appreciate you all trying to help. Thanks!

Oh 4p I totally empathise(is that the right word).i've been using a ,pooter, just over a year The first one I got from older son, which I gave him back when younger son gave me his. He later told me it was goosed, "Buy a new one mother ",so now I have shiny new one
Off I trott to local college only to be told I must learn"Word Processing""and Files and folders. Even though I have a printer, scanner, and digital cam, still scared off using them in case the whole thing blows up.
One son and a grandson have I T degrees, but not time it takes to teach a thicky (sad).

Thanks BB and LL. I have managed to get some pictures for the compy but have given up with the infernal machine. I shall pop to Currys for another ruinously expensive bit of cable and start again later. It's already come in handy though as one of my cats has decided it's a very comfortable bed......the old printer obviously wasn't the right shape. Luckily I put some paper over it so at least it hasn't got half a ton of cat hair inside it. AND she hasn't thrown up down the back of it either. Which is nice.
Juliet, I love that card! It really is pixies then? I knew it!!

Now here's a funny thing... I just printed out that "How the internet works" and had to press the All in One button to realign the paper. It worked but it still won't scan a photo for me. Why does the All in One work for one and not the other? It's a mystery.....

4P
Have you got "Microsoft Picture It Photo Standard 9" or anything similar on your PC. I found my old Lexmark would print but not scan but if I did it via that program it worked fine. That's how I always do it now.

For anyone even vaguely interested in my epic struggle with modern technology I can report that, with a certain amount of sadness but huge chunks of relief, that I have GIVEN UP with this THING and shall wait for techy middle daughter to come home for Christmas. She has a simple choice: presents and a hearty Christmas dinner in return for making this poxy scanner work. I think that's fair.

It sounds perfectly fair to me. Just make sure her social calendar is not filled before you hand over said presents and food.
