I used to have a real aversion to Crocosmia. It came from three years of digging out huge compacted clumps of 'Montbretia'. but over the years a few have crept back into the garden, and today I came home from visiting a friend with two new ones. Star of the East and Emily McKenzie'.
I also hated Dahlias, Grandad used to grow them (Cactus and Pompom ) and I always remember them being full of earwigs - I now have about 7 or 8.
Anything you disliked but had grown on you?

Asters because they always had white mould on them but this year grew Aster "Milady mixed" from some free seeds, ( AG) and they seem to be very healthy .....I may be converted ;D

Oh Hydrangeas - how could I forget. I think it's Trebah that advertises '5 acres of Hydrangeas' <shudder> two thoughts, 1).can think of lots of better uses for 5 acres. 2). My worst gardening nightmare.

I love crocosmia! Sure they spread but at least they bloom for me and look lovely and exotic. I love the wisteria when it is blooming. After that I am so tempted to chop it down! It is smothering the magnolia and sends out runners through the flower beds and into the lawn. The mimosa is a beautiful tree in or out of flower. The hundreds of seedlings everywhere is a bit much each year. LOL! ChickaDDD

Pampas grass and Yucca = yuck, yuck, yuckety yuck! Like Phormiums a lot though..how does that work? AND I - do - not - like - pink - daffodils! It's an abomination - what next? Lilac tomatoes......... That's an idea for a new thread - suggestions for ludicrous new colours for plants?

Double daffodils - how messy can a flower get? I also hate pampas grass and yuccas. What about flowers that you used to like until you couldn't control them like alstroemerias?

Cicadeedeedee, In the UK that's not a mimosa. It's a silk tree Albizia julibrissia. Accacia is Mimosa to us. It's another reason why I dislike the use of common names, it's too confusing and misleading.

I dislike flowers that look ridiculously overbred. I especially dislike red hot pokers because there were loads in the garden of 'friends' when I was young and impressionable and didn't recognise a pair of right bitches when I saw them!! ;D

Hey If I was going to write 'pregnant dogs' I would have spelled it correctly. A doge is a 16th century Venetian magistrate and would have been male.
Back to Auntie Beeb and the 3 minute rule for me if we are going to be that twee. The word bitch is innocuous enough, surely.

Hi Dee.
I like the use of scientific names as well just for the reasons you mentioned. I couldn't think / find the proper name so that's why I posted a picture to decrease the confusion.
I have a list of most of my plants and their scientific names hidden somewhere in this computer. Hmmmm. I'll find it. LOL!

Just expressing my frustration because I wrote b-i-t-c-h-e-s in my post and when it was posted the word had been turned into 'pregnant dog{e}s' (sic) without so much as a by your leave.
I think that's silly. It's not a dreadful swearword. If the powers that be want to mess with my freedom of expression I think they should warn/inform me first as a matter of common courtesy. It's very Auntie Beeb.
Have to go now as I can hear my high horse clip clopping up my drive....

Hi Daisy Chain Please don't be annoyed - I was telling someone in a PM about a dog (B-i-t-c-h) and I got the same as you ;D ;D ;D As I had just read your post (pregnant doge) I thought that somehow you had got into my post etc etc. I have no idea what has happened except that the word d-a-m-n has stars in it and the word bloody stays the same. Makes the mind boggle doesn't it I suppose we could try to find out which other words get changed into something entirely different ;D ;D ;D Rosefriend

Hi Rosefriend I am annoyed, though. But I appreciate the reply. At least there is a quick reply on this board. I would love to know the reasoning behind the bowdlerising. At first, I thought bloody would stay the same because it's and adjective as well as a swear word but it's used less frequently as an adjective than b-i-t-c-h is used to mean a pregnant female dog so I think it must be arbitrary silliness. Perhaps Spruance will know.

Hi Daisy Chain
I will try and find out for you. Everything is fairly new to us all but we will get there.
If there is anything else that is annoying you then let us know - if we can do something about it we will.

Thanks, RF, I will await your investigations! Dee - know what you mean about Mahonias. I can't be doing with flashy polyanthus, and I don't like auriculas either. When they feature them on GW in those tidy little pots, my back teeth clench up!

I just tried to type my a-s-s-e-r-t-i-o-n in a pm to Spruance and it came out 'my assertion', though if you type assertion on its own, its ok. I'm afraid I'm finding this far more tedious that the 3 minute rule.
If I type 'm-y a-s-s' without the hyphens it comes out as 'my ass' but I could write about my arse with impunity ;D

I don't like the plumes on a pampas grass but I don't mind the foliage when it has been contained, thankfully we get rather windy days so any plumes that appear don't seem to last too ling as they have a helping hand to snap or bend over (OH loves them)
