hi, we put some Heuchera in early in the year and they seemed to do well, but when we lifted them to divide (wasn't sure if Dr Hessayon meant at the end of the first year, but wanted to have a go) I found some creamy grubs about a cm long with an orange head.
The plants had been looking a bit sad (thought maybe this was a way of begging to be divided) but am now concerned it's grub damage.
Any ideas, anyone?

Vine weevil grubs I'm afraid, kill em all! Provado (sp) is the recommended cure I beleive.... but others may have better Ideas. I haven't had a problem with them up to now (touch wood crossed fingers)

Yes I agree - vine weevil grubs ADORE heucheras and you need to treat your plant straight away. Provado is the best stuff to use, and while you are at it you should treat all container plants because the bugs like to live in pots.

hi Plocket and Sweetleaf, and thanks (I think) for the news...
I don't like using garden chemicals if I can help it, though I'm not totally 'green' - is there a more 'natural' control?
I kept the ones I found in a jamjar of earth in case they turned out to be something useful!
Suppose I'll have to do something with them now...

ps Sweetleaf - is your apple tree looking happy in its new spot?

D. ps Sweetleaf - is your apple tree looking happy in its new spot? Yes it does, thanks for asking ;D you can almost hear it sighing and stretching, I think it needed the extra footroom! RE the grubs, the natural method is to squish them.... ugh!

hmmm that's definitely the critter, rita, and
hmmm that's definitely an unattractive idea, sweetleaf - think I'll put them (minus soil) on the bird table for the robins...

Well be warned Dillodaff that they move quickly and might be gone before the robins get to them. I put them in a bucket of water and leave them for AGES!!!!! They drown eventually ;D

Oooo hadn't thought of escapees!!! - I'll check, but think ours has a fine wire mesh tray with vertical sides below the nut thing to collect debris. They should be secure in there. Am rather looking forward to watching feeding time! Might use a ramekin otherwise...

Vine weevils are everywhere at the moment, I am trying to rescue some of the hanging basket plants, yes I know it is late but they are still in flower & we havenot had a frost yet, and the compost is full of them. The robin & I have been working together & I wash the rootd of the plants clear of soil before I plant them again. I do resort to spraying too when they are in my bricks planted with sempervivums.
