My tamarisk, which is growing from several base branches without a proper trunk, is flopping all over the place. Question is: should I prune it generally and if so, when, or should I cut all the branhes off apart from one and try to make it grow some sort of trunk.

Hi The Tamarix (Tamarisk) probably needs pruning as the growth has become 'floppy', apparantly this needs to be done in the spring, reading the RHS book on pruning, it puts the Tamarix in the same category as a Buddleia davidii. I hope this helps, mine has become very 'woody' due to lack of pruning, so it will be getting cut hard back in the Spring. You can take semi-ripe cuttings in summer or hardwood cuttings in winter. I hope this helps and good luck with the plant.

Thanks for the advice - I had subsequently seen what you suggested somewhere and plan to do it in the spring.
