Hi all,
My lilac bush (bought a year ago) has developed brown spots on its leaves. It's still growing strongly and seems otherwise healthy. The spots are primarily on the old leaves and are about an inch in diameter. Have you any idea what'c causing this, and what I can do? The bush is in a very sheltered spot, gets morning sun and is in good soil. However, I read that one should not feed lilac, so have not fertilised - but have given it plenty of water in dry weather. Any advice gratefully received ... cheers ...

Maybe it has been caused by watering during the day - allowing water to splash onto the leaves while the sun is shining can cause scorch marks.

Hi Rita ... thanks for the tip - but actually I'm always careful to water in the early evening ... <still puzzled and worried smiley> ... cheers ...

Sunburn/scorch?? could easily be on a tender plant 'fresh from the nursery'. If it's just some of the leaves, then it's unlikely to be viral, a scattered 'attack' could be insect... but I think it may be just Autumn. Before writing this I went out and had a look at mine... yep, brown spots on some of the leaves.
They're not the tidiest of plants, Lilac. I'd go for a sort of seasonal 'bad leaf day' and hope for the best.

Thanks for that OM, I feel reassured now - I guess plant hypochondria goes hand-in-hand with being a new gardener! ... cheers ...
