I planted a young catalpa tree earlier this year and I realise that 3 branches are growing from the graft, but I want it to grow with a single trunk so that I can train it to be like a parasol for shade. Would it be safe to prune at least one of the branches at this time of year?

Hi Gardenfrance, Three branches growing from where it is grafted? Is your tree a pre treated one. My neighbours have one that they have to cut back to the graft ( at about 2 meters high) every Spring. It then grows during the year into a big lollipop. Only the non grafted tree they have as well grows as a normal single stem tree. I hope this helps. Dutchy
