Did they not give it to her in a pot? The Forestry Commission might sell bags of soil to go with the tree. But when in doubt ask Oldmoleskin. Dutchy p.s. do not plant it in clay it will die she said out of a childhood misery experiance......

Nooooo! It had a bit of soil and was in a plastic bag - it's only about 6 inches tall!!!
I'm glad you told me that about the clay though - I was thinking of bunging it in the garden. Ah well - it'll go in a pot I guess. With whatever soil someone recommends!!!
Thanks Dutchy!

Was this on a trip to Santa's Grotto perchance?? We have several of them from various years! The Grotto at the Thetford branch of the FC is always amazing (and I don't like Christmas). They go to an enormous amount of trouble. I would suggest you grow it in ordinary garden soil. If not a John Innes No 2 will keep it going for a while in a pot if that's where you want it to grow, and you can upgrade it to No 3 when it's big enough.

Yes it was a trip to Santa's Grotto, and this one is always amazing too. The kids got to go for a walk in the forest, play in the adventure playground, and then visit Santa. I think he must have been given a list of the kid's names because he called LP and said that his elves had told him she'd been very helpful in school! She was thrilled. We know the forest quite well because it's not far from us, but she's never been to the grotto before.
Thanks for the soil advice 4P - I've got some JI No.2 so will plant it up in that. Or LP can anyway!!!

I would have said ericaceous JI no 2.

Having grown one or two in a previous life, (seedlings transplanted into Herfordshire 'topsoil over clay') and seen them, gratifyingly, take off ready for market, I'd say garden soil with extra grit or Innes 3 ditto. The ones we lifted for containerisation (premium price) we always potted into our standard, very gritty peat/loam/coase grit topiary compost.
One of the few things that brings a tear to my eye, the memory of tree sales at xmas...

Thanks to you too OM. I didn't actually have JI No.2 so it's gone into JI No.3, in a deep pot. LP is thrilled, and it's now outside the backdoor. Luckily she hasn't suggested that we decorate it's few tiny branches!!!
