I have recently moved and the previous owner had placed one of these 12 inches from the fence and it is not in the best of shape, shape wise that is. When would be the best time to move it, I have read April is the bext time to plant them, but I am moving one that is established, does it matter? How about pruning to shape it better?

Hum. They don't really like being moved Madon but 12 inches is a bit close to the fence. How big is the plant? It would probably be best moving it after it's flowered, and get as big a rootball as possible. The best time to prune is in early summer when it's in full leaf (it can bleed in spring and suffer from die back when dormant) - and you can prune fairly hard but might lose out on flowers for a couple of years if you are really brutal. I think the key thing is to get a good shape.

Thanks Plocket. I have just gone and measured it, it is in fact 8 inches from the fence!! Thanks for the advice, looks like I have to wait a bit then. The gentleman before was no expert, except in roses and fuschias. He had rows of roses all round the garden around all sides and had fuschias in pots with the odd one in the garden. Why can't people have proper borders, that are more than 2 ft wide? Then I suppose for roses, you don't need them wide! Thanks Keith

Plocket - wouldn't it be best to move it once it is dormant?

Well in the winter magnolias are storing up energy and getting ready to flower in spring, and you don't want to affect that. Hence it's best moving it after flowering. You can bung lots of nice stuff in the ground at the same time to encourage it to produce it's new leaves. They really don't like being moved though so it will always be a risky business.

Magnolias don't like to be moved or planted in Autumn or Winter. Best time is after flowering when it can be mulched and fed well

Thanks for all your replies. By the way it is about 4ft tall, maybe more. I know and only 8inches out fromt the fence! Maybe I should take a photo of it. At least it will give me time to prepare the site it will be going to! Keith
