Hi In November I planted up 36 3litre pots with tulip bulbs ( 5 to a pot, as I had seen done at Eden) I placed the pots under an open sided pergola with a clear plastic roof - to keep some of the unremitting rain off, whilst still lettin them be in the air and with access to the slanty-rain we get. I have noticed that they are showing shoots - surely this can't be right - they're not due to flower until next April/May!!! What should I do?? Will they be ok?? HELP..PLEASE...

36 - 3 litre pots - blimey you have been working hard. Although I am in Germany where winters are far worse, I think that you will find that everything will be OK.
My bulbs come through and then I start having panic attacks and then somehow all is well. I am sure that someone from the UK will come and tell you properly, but all I can suggest if you really are worried is to do what I do, and that is as soon as we get bad frosts I cover my pots over with fleece - you can use newspaper just as well actually. Having said that you should be a little careful if the winter is a very wet one.
It isn't so often that bulbs die from the cold - mostly they just rot from the wet.
Good luck

Ditto that. My tulips and my dafs are showing growth and the first hyacinths are above ground too. It is probably the funny warm weather. Like Rosefriend I panic a bit but all we can do is wait and when real hard frost is predicted cover them up. As long as it is only the noses showing there should not be a problem. Frost will only stop growth. My dafs are also showing signs of leaves. That is a problem. I will have to cover them. I am not sure what I will use though. Dutchy

Would temporarily covering clumps of bulbs with large plastic plant pots/buckets/washing up bowls help protect the shoots when we get a hard frost what does any one think

I shouldn't worry that much. As Dutchy says they just stop growing when it gets really cold. I shouldn't cover them for very long with a bowl. You could always lay a sheet of fleece over them in really severe frosts. When it gets reallyreally cold it might be better to fleece round the pots themselves a bit if you're worried - plastic pots don't insulate as well as being underground.

I wouldn't bother about protecting them. These spring bulbs have very hard tips and many of them are capable of pushing up through ice, so our winter wind and cold shouldn't bother them too much. They'll sort themselves out - nature has a way of doing that!

Gladly - if I knew how to do it!! I did try photobucket or some such thing but you had to pay and I'd already spent a fortune on tulip bulbs!!!

I second that! If I can do it, DEFINITELY anyone can - I am a technical moron........getting a Photobucket account is easy once you've worked it out! Getting things posted on here is still a bit hit or miss for me, but now I've got a working digital camera I'm going to start again! Do try again Auricula!

Now that's a really good idea Jenny! I have tried using gravel but I'm not very happy about it as it's not very environmentally friendly(and is one of my pet hates when it gets stuck in my wellies). I shall definitely use moss now as I have quite a lot on my barn roof anyway. Cheers!

All the bulbs seem to be coming up. where I've cleared leaves there are daffs, crocus, snowdrops with buds, tulips all in the soil.
