I'm getting lots of bulb catalogues now and want some tulips. I'm too lazy to lift them though and the French catalogues don't seem to have a great selection of what they call "botanique" varieties. If for some daffs have to be yellow, for me tulips have to be wine glass shaped with no frilly bits and no Dayglo colours! Can anyone recommend some big tulips (as opposed to miniature ones) which will naturalise?

None of the big flowered ones will really naturalise I'm afraid, they are more 'bedding plants' than anything else in most locations.
I ship to France at no extra cost ;D

Hi dee and toonia. When's the best time to plant Tulip bulbs? On packaging they say from August onwards, and on advice pages they say planting too early can cause 'Tulip Fire'.
I must admit to being a quite confused Gardener

Hi WB! Tulips are generally recomended to be planted in November, as they need cold. If it's earlier it gets them going and their roots can get frisky, hence the "fire" risk. Which incidentally is what happened at Eden in 2004.
Mind you no one has explained to me how tulips grown for the flowermarket in more temperate climes don't get it!

I may invest in some tulips, have just put down the majority of 5kg bag of Daffys so a wee range in colour may be needed.

I get confused about all these reports about tulip fire. Eden certainly had it, and probably still does to some extent, although the planting time in my opinion may have little to do with the disease. More I think due to poor storage of bulbs and incorrect planting depth, and soil contamination. They also had Phylloxera in the grape vines in the Med. biomes, imported on old wild European vines, another disease which can spread, so much for their quarantine system.
What happens about tulips that are left in the ground all year? Mine are and I have never (touch wood) had a poblem, There again I always plant 8"-10" deep and only use species, as I consider the large hybrids almost as annuals, they are rarely as good in sunsequent years.

You must be a mindreader, Dee! I didn't want to question the answer of a bulbwoman but my next question was going to be "why do the bulbs that were already here come back big and strong while the ones I put in get smaller every year!" Now I know, so shall look for more species!

That's very pretty Dee. I need big so I can see them from the windows. When they flower it's often still too cold to loiter outside for long! Off to hiddenbulbs now.....

Had a look round Dee, you have some wonderful plants there. I think I'll go for the cheap and cheerful in the tulip department though, as mentioned above, anything too delicate will get lost and would cause mole/frost worry! I'm very taken by the purple fritillaries, I've never had them before! Are they really, really easy to grow and hardy?

mrskp, I got a Sutton's catalogue today, it's the French version of the English one, if you see what I mean. I saw a collection of tulips in there which may be what you need, it's actually called "Pretty in Pink" and I'm getting them! They're 8€45 which is about a fiver for 15 bulbs. If your mate is really girly, there's also "Cloud Nine" and I've seen one called "Angélique" which is frilly and frothy!
There's no website in my catalogue, I have to order by fax!!!but they must have one in the UK.

I did not check on wholesale or retail Dee. You could be right but at least one can use the site to see what is there and perhaps pester ones own garden center into getting it for you. I was at a builders market the other day and they too sold tulip bulbs but the quality was appalling. Goes to show you really have to pay attention when buying bulbs anywhere. Dutchy
