Perhaps could someone help me please.
In all the years that I have lived in Germany I have never been able to get English bluebells- Hyacinthoides non-scripta. All that is offered here is the Scilla hispanica which I have said to various people are not English bluebells.
I never been in England at a time that I could have bought them -apparently they do not store well and need to be re-planted fairly quickly - or so I have been lead to believe.
Now I have also heard that I can get seeds - again I have never seen them here.
I would personally have thought that bulbs would have been better but perhaps someone could enlightened me please.
Also where do I get them.
Thanks Rosefriend

Try Dee. She collects seeds from hers for Secret Seeds. You can PM Dee on here and probably google for Secret Seeds.

Please be very careful buying Bluebell bulbs from ebay, they very rarely turn out to be out native one.
Most of the people selling bulbs on there haven't a clue and just but them cheap from places like Parkers Wholesale and sell them on.
I contacted loads of seller last year that were advertising English Bluebells yet had photo's of Spanish ones. If they don't know the difference how can you trust them?

Dee the link I gave was for seeds BTW - I think a few choice questions to the seller on ebay might sort the wheat from the chaff

Also where do I get them. Thanks Rosefriend Well, the good news is, at the Show I found a stall selling bulbs where the guy claimed his were Hyacinthoides non-scripta - and they were clearly labelled as such. We had quite a conversation about Scillas and he blamed the rascally Dutch (personally, I've hardly forgiven them yet for setting fire to our ships in the Thames the other year) for distorting the market with hybrids, and was adamant his were the genuine article. So I bought a couple of hundred, and I'll be PMing you re delivery of your share. For anyone interested in English Bluebells, the company was bulbs4u.co.uk from Mansfield, Notts - please, no-one tell me they're the worst offenders on the "bluebell scam" front!! For what it's worth, I did tell him I was buying on behalf of an Internet gardening Club and that he could expect mass email abuse if he was misleading me. OM

OM - do you remember sending me those bluebells. Well we shall soon see (hopefully) whether they are non-scripta or not. well you will have to use your imagination for a while but at least they are coming through. Thanks again - I really am looking forward to seeing them flower. Rosefriend

Oh well done Rose - I planted about 20 bulbs and none have appeared - have a feeling squirrels have had a munch on them. One of the most beautiful of olde england flowers I will have to make do with a walk through the Bluebell wood opposite my house - here is a photo I took in May 2006

What a lovely photo - how lucky you are to be able to see that every year.
I remember years ago being in Sherwood Forest and there are some magnificent parts of the wood there absolutely covered in Bluebells in Spring.

I've found them - the rest of my Bluebells.
In the front garden that doesn't have any sun whatsoever from changing the clocks in October to changing them again in March, the Bluebells have been showing since the beginning of Feb when I took the above photo.
I put some more in the back garden that always gets sun - winter and summer - no bluebells. I have been looking for the past 6 weeks and nothing, - until today when I wanted to plant something and saw tiny bits of green coming though the soil. Why they should be so small at the back where the ground is warmer, I have no idea, but at least I have found them.
Silly I know but it is a little bit of England, which I still miss....

Green (and blue) with envy - I'm in the jennywrenn school of non-appearance, and fear the same cause, so it's nice to know yours are giving pleasure.

I have a few clumps of Bluebells at the bottom of my garden. Have tried to find pictures English Bluebells vs Spanish ones but I can't seem to find any that show me the difference. Can anyone help please with a site that shows them, are they very different looking.

I think the way to spot the difference is the english variety grow flowers on one side of the stem only - just guessing as I think I saw this on the TV last week - and they are not as blowsy as the spanish ones - more delicate

I saw that too Jenny. It was on gardeners world by mr Monty. I have the Spanish ones. Much more butch and you can already see that the flowers are around the flower stem. English blue bells are a protected species and not for sale here.

That is quite a difficult one Chuckles - the leaves of the Scilla Hispanica are broader than the Non-scripta and the only one that I saw straight away that could be an English Bluebell is No 6.
I may also be totally wrong - mine aren't out yet - we are about 2 weeks behind the UK. As soon as they are flowering I will take some pics.

Here is an English Bluebell freshly picked half an hour ago from the wood opposite - I brought three home and felt very guilty; they smell heavenly - it may be out of focus cos it was raining and dark

Gorgeous and the bells seem to be longer and that is why I would say that No 1 and 2 of Chuckles are the Spanish scilla.
Could still be very wrong though.

Here is a pic of my Spanish Bluebells - Scilla Hispanica To me the bells are more rounded and not so deep blue in colour, however the English Bluebells are not flowering yet. RF
