Hi all ... during yesterday's bulb-shop-raid I saw that they have Fritillaria Persicaria. From the picture, it looks quite spectacular but it's also rather dear - around € 10/bulb. Does anyone (Dee, perhaps?) have experience growing this? What conditions does it like - the same as 'normal' fritillaries? I was thinking of getting three bulbs for a special patch, but don't want to splash out until I know a little more (there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of info on the Net). My last extravagance was trillium, which sent up a couple of leaves and then seems to have died, so I'm a bit wary ... cheers ...

I grow that one and it's possibly the easiest of the big to grow, do beware though as a lot of bulbs sold in garden centres etc are very small - they should be about fist size to give a good show the first year and thereafter, Trilliums like a lot of woodland plants doesn't last too long above ground but don't give up, theyhave a tendency to pop up and surprise you - they shouldnt be that expensive either unless you go for one of the really rare ones - only about £4-6 (well mine are)

Dee, thanks for that info ... yes, they were about fist size (quite a large fist, actually) ... so I know where I'm going on Monday, they really look gorgeous (also, I'm trying for lots of purple, orange and yellow next spring, so would go very well). Thanks also for the advice re. trillium - I'll wait and hope to be surprised! That's about what the price was ... I guess it seemed expensive because we'd just renovated a house, spent a fortune dealing with damp and dry rot. etc., and were flat broke ... cheers ...

I was given two Trilliums last year that normally sell for about £28-30 each, that's what I would have called extravagance ;D
