Hello everyone, I am finding lots of plants in my new garden, in fact I find more every time I go out into the garden. I've found about 4 x Hellebore. I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to be doing anything with them at this time of year. On some of them the big leaves are dying with new baby leaves coming up. Should I cut back the dying leaves or just leave them? Also, when does this plant flower - I think it is very early spring?? Thanks

Hi trunkjo
Oh Helleborus - lovely plants - I was always told to get rid of the dead or dying leaves asap and as far as flowering - I have had them flowering in December before now and running into the the Spring.
They do not like being disturbed very much - they are far happier being left alone in one spot for years.
I have a beautiful red one (can't remember the name) that twice has been in flower as it has snowed and it looked marvellous.

i found one that just appeared under my hedge in the front garden last spring. The previous owner was in no way a gardening person, so I doubt he'd done much to tend to it and the flowers lasted for ages.
I just clear up the obviously dead leaves occasionally, but other than that I've left mine alone. I shall see next spring how well it does.

My hellebores are starting to show their new growth for over winter so I cut off all the old leaves as it helps prevent Hellebore Death or whatever it's called. Good luck with yours Trunkyjo!

I have Helleborus Nigra. I got some seeds from it and would like to know how to grow those on. They are in a pot but nothing is showing yet. Do I keep the pot in a cold frame or just out and about? Dutchy

The best person to ask is Slugger as he grows lots of hellebores. I bunged some seeds in pots earlier this year but so far nothing is happening. I'm going to put them in the coldframe over winter to give a bit of protection and hopefully they will germinate!

No they don't need frost, which is really good as I've just planted out 100 odd seedlings, and we rarely get frost here. I'm up to about 300 plants now - yet another obsession

This is what Slugger had to say about it.
Hi Dutchy. Not sure I know everything - has someone been spreading rumours?! ;D
Helebore seeds are east though. Sow as fresh as possible onto seed compost, keep damp but not soaking, cover and place in cold frame or bottom shelf in the greenhouse. Check them again in spring!
So I am going to put mine in the cold frame now and have patience
